5 out of 5 stars Love the Kindle   September 5, 2008

I've had my kindle for a month and have found myself not wanting to put it down. Its easy on the eyes even when I was reading on the beach (screen didn't glare nearly as much as normal white print pages). Books download fast and there's a big selection (as long as you don't want TSR/Wizards of the coast titles). Only down side is the page turning buttons are too large on both sides and its easy to turn a page when you don't want to. Other than that its great so far and think anyone who loves to read should think about one.

4 out of 5 stars Not "fat" finger friendly   September 5, 2008

I have large hands. Often while keyboarding my fingers strike two keys at once. Small keyboards are problematic. Similarly I find myself hitting the "next" page, "previous" page or "back" buttons accidentally when adjusting the Kindle in my hands or while not keeping perfectly still. Unfortunately, and as a result, I lose my place in the book if I am unaware that the page advanced (especially the "back" button). It is a minor inconvenience; I use a lot of "bookmarks" and they are easily inserted.

Therefore my criticism of the Kindle lies with the sensitivity / positioning of those keys. But as I remember a review I had read prior to purchasing the Kindle contained a similar comment. As you can also read, that comment did not prevent me from purchasing the Kindle.

I recently took a trip and the Kindle was very convenient, light weight, and not burdensome to carry. And no questions from TSA!

I definitely recommend that if you read alot and/or travels frequently that you should purchase a Kindle.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, usefull, very very good!   September 5, 2008

I am sooo happy that I bought this Kindle.

I travel a lot teaching seminars, and cannot carry loads of books with me...... so here is my solution!

Internationally you can download to your laptop, then transfer the files to your Kindle.

This is the ticket of the future of a more sustainable humanity that never the less is very educated!

Imagine the amount of trees that we will save when all of us get on a Kindle!

It is a great tool, easy to use. I can settle down with it on an airplane, in the garden, on the balcony..... I a split second I open to the page I last left off.... I can read five books in the same time period, have the bookmarks recall where I left off in each book.

I love how the text reads....the paper look is what was promised.... I can highlight clips, add comments..use them later in lectures.....

IT IS GREAT!

I would love to see all of humanity get on their own Kindle instantly, and eliminate the need to buy newspaper... (no more delivery costs, across the planet, not trees coming down just to fill paper wastebaskets that night...)

It is easy to learn how to use.... easy to handle....and has lots of surprising features.....that I love. AND the page flipper, though it is very responsive does not get ticked too easily, as one typically sits down comfortably to read, and isn't constantly handing it over to another person. (I had read a bad review about that,.....but that person only held the Kindle for a few minutes)

The download of a new book is so fast, in less than half a minute your new book is there!
New books are coming onto the market at a rapid rate.
IT IS OUR FUTURE!

Have fun!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars kINDLE WIRELESS READER   September 5, 2008

I love this item-it is light and easy to take anywhere with you-it is easy to hold-there are only 2 reasons I don't give it 5 stars-the battery does not hold a charge for a week as advertised even with the wireless aspect off. The other thing is if you want to read a new release you have to wait a few weeks to get the price to $9.99-not all titles are $9.99. A recent release was over $23.00, and I had to wait 2 weeks for the price to drop. This is a great item to have for a traveller, as you can take several books with you without the weight.

5 out of 5 stars Best book substitute I've found   September 5, 2008

Having suffered from arthritis for a number of years now, it has become increasingly difficult for me to read traditional books, especially large ones of greater than 500 pages. I've tried books on tape, books on CD, and audio and ebooks on my computer. Though each one has its merits, none comes close as a substitute for a conventional book. In addition, the range of titles available in each of these formats proved to be somewhat limiting. As a life-long reader, these were important considerations in my decision to purchase a Kindle. After trying out my husband's Kindle, I decided to take the plunge, and I have not been disappointed. The "book" is small and light-weight and, when my wrists and hands do become tired, I just fold the Kindle cover and prop my book up, so I don't have to hold it at all. I've also found the availability of titles to be very good and to keep improving with time. (I even found Peter Mattheissen's newest book, Shadow Country, which I was unable to find before in any other format than hardbound. At 800+ pages, this certainly was not an option for me, given the state of my wrists.) I would also highly recommend the Mighty Bright book reading light for Kindle. With dual Kindles and dual Mighty Bright book lights, my husband and I now can read in bed without disturbing the other's sleep.
