Avoid cable clutter January 4, 2009 Ordered the kit and it was faithfully and speedily delivered. My main complaint is that it did NOT come with a VGA (male)-to-VGA (male) cable, which you need to get the unit to work. I own a Fujitsu laptop, which offers only a VGA (analog) output. I note with disdain that the Macbook laptops have digital (HDMI) outputs. Anyhow my Sharp Aquos HDTV has a VGA (female) input. I ordered the needed VGA-VGA cable from ebay at a cost of $10, including shipping. A dongle fits into the USB 2.0 input of the Fujitsu, and the VGA cable links the HDTV to the wireless unit. Worked like a charm. But the fun begins when you try to make the connection between the HDTV and the laptop! First, the Sharp offers an input connection #6 (RGB) for linking to a PC. The printed user's guide is vague about how this input should be configured. Opening the "menu" on the HDTV, I found a drop-down set of menus. One of the options is "HDMI skipping." It took some time for me to discover that my RGB (input #6) had been "skipped." The result was that the input selector on the Sharp screen showed option #6 as grayed out. By reactivating the RGB input from the HDTV menu, the Sharp was now ready to receive the input from the Fujitsu. Second mission was to configure the Fujitsu laptop settings. Start>>Control Panel>>Display>>settings. Did I mention I was using Windows XP? If you simply want to use the HDTV as your primary screen, UNCHECK both boxes (especially the one that asks, "extend my desktop to this monitor"). Choose "apply" and "ok." At that point, what you see is what you get.
One other disappointment is that the kit transmits only the video, not the audio from the PC. I can watch Netfix instant access now via the laptop on the HDTV screen, but to hear the audio I either use earphones or run a patch cord from the laptop to the aux-in on my sound system, which means I'm once again confronted with cable-clutter.
But the IOGear is at least a first step.
Best Solution on the Market October 31, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Representing a fairly large school district, we considered buying this product to use with our tablet pc's and mounted projectors. The first product we tried (PC2TV) did not even come close the features and quality of this product. Their solution uses wi-fi (802.11G) standard to connect which is very slow in comparison and interferes with our regular network traffic. When you have a lab with 30+ wireless tablets, you cannot spare the bandwidth for the pc2tv device. The IOGEAR product fixes all that.
Using the new Wireless USB standard (haven't seen another device using this tech yet it's so new) it has 9 times the bandwidth of wi-fi (480Mbps). What's that means, is that it can do really high resolutions and be very smooth. I was playing a standard DVD, at 1680X1080 resolution, and boy is it smooth. It does drop a frame here and there, but compared to the pc2tv device, there simply is no comparison.
Tested on Vista. Once the driver is installed, I can plug in the dongle to any usb port and it automatically connects and extends my desktop. To change to clone mode or resolutions, all you have to do right click an icon near the clock (system tray) and pick it. Changing USB ports does not require a driver reinstallation.
The dongle and the device come pre-associated, so you don't have to worry about the device in the next room interfering. However, if you want to connect to multiple devices, so far the only way is to briefly connect your laptop to the device using the supplied mini usb cable. Hopefully they will have a wireless method to do this in the future.
