You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands on the continent of Thedas throughout the centuries. Betrayed by a trusted general in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice. As you fight your way towards the final confrontation with an evil nemesis, you will face monstrous foes and engage in epic quests to unite the disparate peoples of a world at war. A romance with a seductive shapeshifter may hold the key to victory, or she may be a dangerous diversion from the heart of your mission. To be a leader, you must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice your friends and loved ones for the greater good. Gameplay Dragon Age: Origins is a 3D oriented RPG based in a dark, heroic, fantasy realm where moral choices have a lasting impression on the people you meet, the members of your own party and the world around you. The inclusion of subtitle "Origins" in the game's title refers to the six unique origin stories available to new heroes as a new game begins. Each of these has an impact on the player's motivations and his or her experience, and renders a unique prelude, path, and possible ending(s) to the game. There are many different endings to the game based on the origin story of the character and the choices you make as you play through the game. The game features three character classes--warrior, mage, and rogue--and three races of being--Human, Elf or Dwarf--that can assume these classes. Although most game elements, such as weapons, magic, etc., are available to any character, each class and race has different strengths, abilities and affinities which lend themselves to better utilizing different elements. Dragon Age: Origins is a single player game based on party-based gameplay and combat where the player can join, control and quest with up to three non-player characters (NPCs). Players can also quest alone if they so choose, but with the chance of survival are slim. Convincing NPCs to join you, and treating them well may be necessary depending on the varying sentiments between the player and the NPC, or between the NPC's in the party based on the chosen history written into the origin story accepted at the beginning of the game. This uncertainty allows for a variety of possible dynamics within the party ranging from open hostility, all the way to romance. The game progresses in real-time via a pause-and-play tactical combat system that allows the player to check inventory levels, equip a character, etc. in a slight vacuum. Additional features found in the game include: a combination of a standard loot system and a currency system based on gold silver and copper; advanced character customization functionality; the use of poison, traps and herbalism; dual-wielding skills; and "spell combos," which allow players to chain together different spells to create a unique effects. Endless Bugs March 19, 2010 T. Stella The amount of bugs and glitches in this game is appalling. At first I enjoyed the game very much, that made all the more frustrating when these gitches pop up. Every consievable bug is there: weapons float outside the characters hands, levels are impossible to finish, the characters arms remain stiff throughout cutscenes, characters freeze up, characters vanish during cutscenes. It's as if the programmers didn't do a proper crash course when finished programming. Pathetic! It's the same with the Awakening expansion pack.
Beware the bug March 12, 2010 Prometheus (USA) I have enjoyed this game and have played it a number of times, but there is a serious bug in it that will corrupt your saved files. If you purchase the Stone Prisoner option and replace Lloyd with Bella as the head of the Redcliff Tavern the bug will start and eventually corrupt your files. This is will happen if you remove the Shale Stones from her chest and sell them for your precious gold. This bug has apparently been fixed on the computer version from what I have read but it remains on the XBox versions. The graphics for the game should have been much better and EA could be accused of false advertising since this game is not even remotely similar to the promotional videos for it. I was very disappointed by that. I also am not happy that the merchants charge about 5 times more than the sell back for items making you reluctant to purchase much of the neat armors and swords and such. Unlike games like Oblivion all the merchants seem to buy back things at the same prices and so when you buy that 27 gold priced sword you will only get maybe 5 gold back for it. For me this is a real draw back in the game and is just stupid on the part of the developers. There is enough things about this game that make it interesting if you like this kind of game. I have played it over and over and enjoyed many things about it and continually discover new things in it but it is far from perfect and when you put so much time in a game and discover you have a serious bug that could prevent you from playing to the end, well that is a real disappointment. I had this problem too with Oblivion when I apparently went to a certain ruin too soon. Never did finish that one.
Enjoyable Game March 11, 2010 K. Hoffman (Pensacola, FL United States) Its a fun game, though my teen son has found it to be a bit complicated.
another hit for bio ware March 9, 2010 abe (wva) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
the cover of this video game is a dragon made of blood.thats so cool!the buzz on the net was big for this one.i dont usualy let something like that make me buy a game.then someone told me about how it was made by bio ware who also made some of my all time favorite games like mass effect and star wars:knights of the old republic.he said it was like a mid-evil star wars video game.
the game rocks!i would have given it a 5 star rating exept for a few annoyances.one was there is violence against children in 2 parts.another was that there was no real indicator as where i was supposed to go.i dont like to think to much when im playing a video game.lastly.there was a demon level that required LOTS of thinking.plus it was, well,a demon level.i think demons are getting all too common in video games these days.remember, when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks into you.
well, besides that, its great fun.unlike countless other rpg's,you get to fight not one but many many many dragons.there are pretty cool characters in your party.especialy this hot mama red head thief chick.
the story is ok.the action is cool.therev are a lot of moral decisions to be made.you know, the old good dwarf bad dwarf routine.you can exact revenge on most anyone you want to.
some weird things you might notice are purple flames around your characters.i beat the game and dont know what thats about.also, blood is all over your party all the time after fights.
as far as mid -evil rpg's go,i'd rank this one 4th of all time behind fable 1 and 2 and elder scrolls 4.just dont look at your character when he's leaving the brothel or you WILL be freaked out.
oh my :o March 8, 2010 C. Jarrett okay so ive been thinking about getting this game since it came out, and i finaly broke down this weekend and bought it. The only thing i can say about it is WOW. its insane, fun, and brutal. The graphics leave a little to be desired, but the whole scale of the game makes up for it trust me. The action is intense, and the battles are epic to say the least, plus sometimes youll be treated to a brutal finishing move (in particular the takedown of the ogre, that was sick!) menues are easy to work through and stats etc are easy to manage. All the old school Dungeon crawlers like me should note that I havent crunched hours into a game like this since Diablo II, so buy it and love it. My only complaint with the game is that when moving from area to area, you use a map mode instead of traveling yourself, which is kind of a let down, but youll get used to it.
