Way better than quakers November 14, 2009 Nagasubramanian Krishnan I have been having this as breakfast for a week now. very satisfied. not mushy as quakers as mentioned by other reviewers. cooking time is 4 minutes for me which is kind of a nice balance of getting quick breakfast in morning which is very healthy and rich in fibre. highly recomended
Excellent, with minor additions October 31, 2009 RevDorothyL (Nashville, TN USA) I wasn't terribly impressed with this product at first. Yes, it's chewier and nuttier than quick-cooking rolled oats, but I never buy those anyway and can't stand 'creamy' oatmeal.
For many years I've made a very chewy, nutty oatmeal by adding boiling water from the kettle to a bowl of old-fashioned rolled oats, which I've already mixed with a pinch of salt and cinnamon, dried cherries, raisins, and walnuts or pecans which I've broken up into tiny pieces with my fingers (just enough boiling water to completely cover the old-fashioned oats, and then four minutes on high in the microwave, and add honey or brown sugar and milk, and dig in). The microwave recipe for McCann's Quick and Easy steel-cut oats was essentially the same, except taking at least two minutes longer, and the end result seemed slightly less chewy than the old-fashioned oats.
However, after buying several bags of teff recently (tiny Ethiopian grain -- I bought Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain Teff, 24-Ounce Packages (Pack of 4) on a special deal here on Amazon) I discovered that the combination of these Quick and Easy steel-cut oats and whole-grain teff, cooked in the microwave for six minutes and allowed to sit for one more minute, is WONDERFUL-tasting and gives you an energetic and nutritious start to the day.
Here's the general idea (makes enough for one extra-large serving for me, or two regular-sized servings of porridge for company):
In a large microwave-safe serving bowl or small glass casserole, combine 1/2 cup McCann's Quick & Easy oats, a generous pinch each of salt and ground cinnamon, 1 or 2 heaping tablespoons of teff, and whatever dried fruits and/or nuts you like in your breakfast cereal. Add just under two cups of boiling water from the kettle (you want about a 3-to-1 ratio of water to oats and teff for a thick, chewy porridge). Stir, and follow the microwave instructions for the oatmeal, using the longer time (cook on high for 3 minutes, open the microwave just long enough to quickly stir the oatmeal, then cook for another 3 minutes, and wait an additional minute before removing from the microwave). Add in a dollop of wildflower honey and whatever milk you like, and you've got a mouth-watering breakfast that will keep you going strong until supper-time, if need be.
McCann's Steel cut oatmeal September 19, 2009 Carolgus (Southbury, CT United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I cannot find this particular kind (Quick and Easy) in any stores in my area, in New Jersey or in Florida. I only wish I could buy single boxes...as it is, I put several in the freezer so it would keep. I don't know if this is a good idea or not.
There is no comparison when it comes to steel cut and rolled oats. This product is fabulous!

I have really liked this product, but the original was a pain to make. This product tastes almost exactly the same but is much easier to cook. Good job to McCann's for making this tasty product easier to cook.
Fast satisfying breakfast, Get the 5-min kind! July 11, 2009 colababy (United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I used to get the 30-minute kind but this tastes just as good and takes so little effort. Just 5 min and it's the same great taste.
BTW, I don't heat it in the microwave (you can though) because it's hard to get it to not overflow. You have to stop and stir it a lot.
