Amazon.com Review
What do you get when you cross an alligator and a giraffe? We're not sure either, but we bet it resembles the Corona Clipper 14-foot Professional Compound Action tree pruner. With a reach of up to 14 feet and a heat-treated, high-carbon cutlery steel blade, this mighty tool will meet the needs of even the most hardcore arborists. The cutting power is provided by this pruner's heavy-duty, chain-drive, compound-action pulley system, which effectively triples your cutting power. The angled zinc-alloy pruning head allows you to hook and cut branches up to 1-1/4 inches in diameter more easily. Operated by Corona Clipper's exclusive PowerGlide rope-pull system, the shearing action cuts cleanly and resists binding.

Need to cut a branch that's a bit thicker? You'll be yelling "Timber" in no time thanks to the curved 13-inch razor-tooth saw blade. With teeth sharpened on three sides, this saw blade cuts on both the up and the down stroke, and enables you to cut twice as quickly as conventional blades. The lightweight and sturdy fiberglass pole telescopes from 7 to 14 feet, allowing for maximum reach, includes an internal stop that keeps the poles from separating, and ends with a comfortable 24-inch foam grip.

4 out of 5 stars does the job   July 24, 2007

Product arrived intact and on time. Easily assembled, no missing parts. Pruner cuts easily, saw is very sharp. Cuts branches easily, and has plenty of reach. I think that if the people that have had problems with this product would use the product for what it is designed for, and not try to make it into a manual chain saw, they also would be pleased. It is not for heavy duty cutting of large branches, or lopping large branches. It is for light to medium pruning of medium sized limbs. For that job it is a good buy and a high quality tool.

4 out of 5 stars Generally a good pruner   September 18, 2006

I have owned another Corona pole pruner for many years and purchased this one for the extra few feet - anything to help me reach a slightly higher branch without climbing a ladder is a safety feature. This model has allowed me to reach all that I can reasonably ask for, as I have used longer, commercial pole pruners (up to 21 feet) and they get too unwieldy to conveniently use.

What I really like about this model is that the base of saw blade is attached with a through-bolt; on some of the other Corona models it is attached with a screw threaded into a tapped hole in the alloy pruner head. This stripped out on me after many years of use, and though I was able to re-tap it with a larger screw, the through-bolt design is more durable.

I also really like the double pulley design which gives more mechanical advantage than on my older model, and the quality of the head and saw in general. I have experienced some of the slippage problem with the telescoping poles, but not at full extension.

I have also experienced some jamming of the bicycle chain if the rope gets on the wrong side of the pulley. This is easy to do when threading the saw head through branches to reach a specific spot. I would be just as happy to have all rope, and may replace this if it becomes annoying.

Oh yeah, it's really long, even when 'collapsed'; 8 feet 9 inches with saw blade attached, so make sure that you have a spot tall enough or long enough to store it.

5 out of 5 stars No need to call professional tree service   March 23, 2006

I was hesitating to make the purchase due to the price and review comments, but I have purchased Corona Clipper products in the past, so decided to see it for myself.

The lopper works great on branhces with reasonable diameter. The chain runs smoothly. The Razor Tooth Saw blade is sweet. I use this feature more than the lopper.

On tougher cut, the extension rod SLIPS OUT. I tighten up the lock some more by hand. It works great after that. But then, the lock is too tight to loosen up. I find a strap wrench is pretty handy. You can get this at Home Depot in the Plumming section. Since it wraps around the lock evenly with a nylon strap, it should not break the plastic lock. Remember to apply the force slowly.

Too bad other people had bad experiences with this tool. I hope you give it a shot and see it for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Tuly problematic   November 16, 2005

Comments from other reviewers re the locking mechanism are unfortunately on target. The slipping defeats efforts to apply the necessary force to a saw cut -- and even trying to tighten down with big pliers (why should we have to??) will not solve the problem. Sadly, the bad news does not end there. The lopper mechanism employs a bicycle-style chain at the businss end, which would at first glance seem to be a fine idea (robust strength, and no rope chafe to be concerned about). BUT, inexcusably poor engineering of the guides through which the chain runs means that the chain itself can all too easily twist, bind, kink, and jam under load. So the pruning session comes to a complete halt, and we have to make a trip back to the barn for dismantling and clearing of the mechanism, on the workbench. This is designer error, not operator error. After having the same thing happen three and four times a day in regular use, we replaced the chain with spectra line, and thus solved the problem. Buyer beware, and what a shame that there are few other choices in the current marketplace. This could and should be a much better product.

2 out of 5 stars locking mechanism sticks   May 11, 2003

The lopping and sawing work fine, but the plastic extension lock is stuck so I can't loosen it. In spite of that, the extension mechism slips when I put strong sawing pressure on it. This is a very back feature on an otherwise well-engineered product.

I certainly would not buy this pruner if I had it to do over again.
