Z5 impression after one year October 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife purchased the Z5 used from JL Hufford. The first Z5 worked for about a week before I noticed it was shutting down after pressing the power button. Called JL Hufford and they immediately sent out a replacement unit. Shipped the old one back to them no problem. They have great customer service.
The Z5 has worked flawlessly over the last year. We use it regularly and I love how flexible and easy it is to use. In fact I even trained my five year old daughter how to make me a cup! The only downside is that the water container could be larger. Yes I know it has a huge container compared to most of these machines but I'd sacrifice another inch in width to hold more. Ours fits on a counter top and still has room to fill the beans without pulling it out. It's a large machine so make sure you plan for where it will be.
The frother on this machine is amazing. I love to make the kids frothy hot chocolate. They think it's the best. I particularly enjoy the ease to clean the machine. The entire front tray slides out and this brings with it the used coffee grounds. In one easy step you can clean the drip tray and remove the grounds. It cleans easily with reminders to replace the water filter or to put in a cleaning tablet. We use some cleaning tablets made for another brand but they work just as well as the original type that came with it. We do use the original type water filter as that is machine specific. They last a long time so not a huge expense. Considering I thought my wife was crazy for buying such an expensive machine... I am now thoroughly sold on it! Very impressive machine and reliability has been 100% so far.
3 years of delicious Coffee! The Bently of Coffee Makers September 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought my Z5 almost three years ago, and I've been completely satisfied with the product!
I've had no issues with the unit during that time, and I use it on a daily basis (The counter shows over 1000 Cappuccinos from this baby). I know it's expensive; however, it's extremely high-quality and if you have the cash, and you tabulate the cost of your Daily Starbucks fix, you'll find that the machine will pay for itself after a few years. The Espresso that it produces is far better than what a get at most coffee houses, in my opinion. You also have all the flavor controls in your hands and not those of a college-student barista, so you can try many different combinations and types of beans to suit your palette, becoming a coffee connoisseur in your own home.
The only complaint I have about the Z5 is with the milk dispenser. It doesn't really store well in the fridge, and is generally more of a hassle than it's worth. I just fill a small glass with my desired amount milk and place the dispenser hose in it.
I plan to keep the unit until it dies (it's out of warranty at this point) and upgrade to the next generation, if Jura ever releases one, though I can't think of much refinement that would be required as this unit makes my perfect cup of coffee.

Expensive, yes, but makes terrific cappucino, latte, and more June 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After researching for months, including test-driving several machines in-store, I finally decided to shell out the big bucks and splurge on this machine. Four weeks into ownership, I couldn't be more pleased with the product, and there has been absolutely zero buyers' remorse.
One button, and it creates a perfect cappucino, latte, or espresso in about 30 seconds.
The in-store rep gave me a very good warning that I should never use oily beans in the grinder, since the grinder would probably clog. Indeed, the product brochure suggests leaving oily beans out in a shallow container, uncovered, for at least 3 hours for the oil to evaporate. (I'd recommend longer than that.) I use either Illy beans or Starbucks House Blend (whole), both of which are rather dry.
What made me settle on this device was the recognition that I almost always drink espresso drinks with some amount of milk in them (e.g., cappucino, latte, etc.); and I didn't want a lengthy multi-step process that involved cleaning multiple containers. If I were cooking for 1 or two, I'd probably have bought a more manual machine. But with 3 school-age young kids, I find I often have very little time in the morning. But with this terrific machine, I can get them all breakfast and make my own drink (and keep the machine clean) and breakfast without any problem in before heading out the door to drive them to school. Great if you're pressed for time.
This unit would be ideal in a small office; we keep ours in a walk-in pantry at home, which is nicely out of the way. It has very intuitive LED instructions, prompts you to rinse the unit at exactly the right time, takes only seconds to warm up, and took only 30 minutes from unloading to enjoying my first drink.
I do agree that an investment in glass-insulated mugs is very worthwhile to go along with this unit. While drinks do come out hot, they are at just the right drinkable heat when they come out and can cool faster. But thermally-insulated glasses were the perfect answer, and I can savor the drink over an hour or more. If you enjoy chai tea lattes as my wife does, be sure to heat or microwave the tea mixture to HOT before mixing in the milk.
5 stars. Great machine.

Jura-Capresso 13214 Impressa Z5 Automatic Coffee Center
When it works, the machines makes great coffee. When it does not, you are in for a load of trouble because the manuals are unhelpful, and customer service is a joke. For those of you that think that spending $3,000 - 4,000 on a coffee machine might entitle you to some degree of service, Jura-Capresso will remove the veils from your eyes. The telephone service is slow and closes unexpectedly, and the e-mail and voice-mail options are a joke since the company never responds.
