1 out of 5 stars waste of time and money   November 17, 2008
Anything thicker than half an inch - the machine stalls, even if you try to feed it in short bursts. Once it stalls, you have to unscrew three nuts, and the main one (with a safety power-off) is located so close to the body of the machine that you can only make a quarter of a turn at a time, otherwise your fingers get caught between the nut and the machine. Once you unscrew all the nuts and lift the top, you do not see anything wrong there, no bits of wood stuck between the knives or anything, so you replace the top, screw the nuts, start it - and then you go through the whole procedure two minutes later, for no apparent reason.
Waste of time and money if you want to chip branches, even small ones. OK for twigs - but even then you do not produce real chips, you mostly get torn pieces of twigs 3-5 inches long.

5 out of 5 stars McCulloch 14Amp Chipper/Shredder   November 4, 2008
McCulloch 14-Amp Electric Chipper/Shredder #MCS2001
It is very easy to use and easy to fix it's jam-ups. It even works much better than my old gasoline operated MTD 421-645 Chipper Shredder.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Chipper/shredder   November 2, 2008
This is a very good product for most non-industrial projects. It is one of those items that are not used every day, but, when you need it you need it. It certainly reduces what used to be bags upon bags of branches and other garden debris, into a couple of bags of useful mulch.

3 out of 5 stars Solid but limited performance   October 30, 2008
This chipper/shredder is solidly built but slow in performance of either of its functions. The shredder's capacity is limited to only a handful or two at a time and needs manual assistance in feeding the leaves through the narrow opening which separates the hopper from the shredding mechanism. The chipper's stated ability to handle branches up to 1 inch diameter is exaggerated for the oak branches I've been feeding it.

Assembly was a chore to perform alone due to the weight of the motor, and attaching the legs to the housing isn't intuitive as the width's differ.

While the end product is satisfactory, it takes such a long time to complete either task that I really wonder if it is worth the effort involved even for my small home property.

4 out of 5 stars Fine for light duty   October 30, 2008
This is a fine light-duty shredder for the small garden. I owned a big MTD 8-HP chipper some years ago, and there is simply no comparison. It was a monster: heavy, incredibly noisy, and cost four times what this one does, but it took pretty much anything you threw at it. This little machine makes no such claims, nor did I expect it to work like its big brethren. Instead, we have an easy to move, pleasingly quiet, easy to use machine. Feeding it wheelbarrows full of light clippings, twigs, and dry leaves goes quickly and smoothly. No clogs for me, but then everything has been dry so far. Fed it a few one-inch branches and those were gobbled up nicely, though not blazingly fast, and of course that makes quite a bit more noise. Mulch output is exceptionally fine.

Tip: You can use a 5-Gal bucket to catch the output. A rectangular bucket would be even better. Stuff comes out fairly gently and you don't get shrapnel sprayed all over. Nice.

Do follow the directions in the long review written by u12soccercoach. If you've barely handled a wrench, get some help. I did use my sabre saw to open up the top inlet a bit, by about an extra inch, which made it easier to feed bigger clumps of leaves and twigs. I wouldn't remove too much though, or you will definitely get a lot of stuff spitting back up out of the grind chamber.
