Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A sleek, European design combined with top-notch features and affordability makes this Chamonix espresso machine a favorite. Briel has improved on its original design by adding adaptability for use with grounds or pods. It also features a patented Auto Espresso Flow, a micro-chip timing circuit that lets you control the amount of espresso produced. In addition, it offers 15-bar pump pressure with auto self-priming, Turbo Jet Frother for lots of thick, milky froth, Crema Master filter for genuine crema every time, AquaStop No-Drip system to eliminate remnant water, Two thermostats for coffee and steaming cycles plus a third for safety, Stainless steel boiler, Large, removable reservoir and water filter on intake, Removable overflow tray for simple cleanup and Built-in coffee tamper and separate measuring spoon.

Amazon.com Review
This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso with the push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. Other noteworthy features include a removable 30-serving water tank with an intake water filter and water-level display, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, and a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine.

5 out of 5 stars Espresso Workhorse   June 12, 2008

I've owned this machine for over five years and have beaten the bejesus out of it.... after thousands of espressos it is still going strong -- ! Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad   December 15, 2007

I have a love-hate relationship with this machine.

On the good side, I've probably made thousands of excellent cups of espresso and latte. So, it has paid for itself (compared to Starbucks) about 20 times over!! This machine has the minimum features, 15 bar pump and dual stage heater - don't buy a machine with less.

On the bad side, this machine is not the quality you would hope for (probably explains the reasonable price). The first thing you'll notice are the drips. The steamer drips, then the heating tank drips, then... I've had this thing apart about 10 times, and finally have tighened and adjusted and added o-rings until if finally doesn't drip anymore. The steamer valve is the worst part. Unless Briel has redesigned it, don't bother paying them to send you a new one, it will drip too. I found an o-ring that was close enough to shave down to fit - seems to work just fine. The other annoyance is that if I don't clean everything immediately and take the tumbler off right away, the next cup of coffee tastes terrible. I'm still not sure where the bitter is hiding, I think the "no drip" feature is sucking old coffee juice back up into the machine.

Anyway, if you fix (or live with) the drips, and are super diligent about cleaning everything immediately, you can make really good espresso and not wreck your budget. Just realize that you are not buying a top-end machine, so keep your expectations modest.

4 out of 5 stars Good machine, needs a betterr basket   June 26, 2007
This is my third Briel espresso machine. Other than gasket problems I like the products a lot. The latest machine has a basket that is smaller than the one on my previous machine, so slow to filter that I kept my old basket and got rid of the new one.

I did have problems with the first machine I received (did not work) and the second (broken basket retainer) but Amazon was quick to replace the first and give me credit for the basket on the second.

5 out of 5 stars Still brewing after 5 years   March 21, 2007

I bought this unit back in 2001. It took me some time early on to understand the key to making good espresso primarily lies with the grind. The problem I had early on was that I was buying the pre-grined espresso coffee in the supermarket from companies like Lavazza etc, however I learned that these grinds were not refined enough for espresso machines. I bought a standard blade grinder and normally I will take a standard supermarket grind along with such popular espresso roasts as Starbucks, and put them into the grinder and grind for at least 10 seconds to develop a sandy gritty appearance but not powdery. Prior to learning this, I was unhappy that I wasn't getting the espresso I expected with the Crema on the top.
Well, none of this was due to this espresso machine. The Briel has been an excellent purchase. The quality of the brewing is great. I've had no issues with the pump or frothing system, and the brewing produces a beautiful creme on the top. Also, I noticed at least for my tastes that a double shot cycle produces a much better espresso.
a great unit.
Update as of 02/07/08 - Buy a Burr Grinder. This is the key to wonderful espresso. I played with a variety of grinds and now have a suitable grind for the Briel. It is wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for the price   February 15, 2007

After reading several reviews for machines in this price range and having some concerns about the workmanship on the Briel, I decided to buy it anyway as the rest of the reviews sounded pretty good. So far no issues at all. The machine is fine, there were no loose parts, nothing coming off - it actually seems well constructed. Some of the other negative feedback seems to have been user error as well. If you follow the instructions, you won't have any issues. It makes good Espresso and Cappuccino - much better than the $100 steam machine that I had before. I creates good crema (you can adjust to make more or less)and the frother works well also. For the average home user that enjoys a good Espresso or Cap, this is a good machine. I used a Starbucks Espresso Roast for my first batch and couldn't tell a difference between home made and buying an Espresso at Starbucks. You just have to play with different beans to get the flavor you want. The machine does what it is supposed to do.
