Amazon.com Product Description The Black and Decker Grass Hog XP electric string trimmer and edger is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that gives you fast trimming performance in the toughest weeds, grass and overgrowth. The strong 7.2 Amp motor with high-torque transmission design delivers constant power. This trimmer offers a generous 14-inch cutting swath, and the .080-diameter heavy-duty dual-line system provides improved cutting ability with longer tool life. The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) cuts faster, has less line wear, and uses centrifugal force so no bumping is required. This trimmer/edger has a lightweight design, weighing only 6.9 pounds, so it is easy to maneuver; the motor and transmission are mounted between the gripping areas, distributing the weight of the tool for better control and less fatigue. The featured Groom'N'Edge quickly converts the equipment from a trimmer to an edger and back again with just a push of the button; the head rotates 180 degrees and the flip-down edge guide makes edging along sidewalks, driveways, and flower-beds fast and simple. The handle can be height adjusted for any user and the soft grips provide maximum control and comfort. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty.

Terrible September 14, 2008 I've gotten about three and-a-half hours of use out of this product, and the belt has already broken. The engine runs, but the trimming apparatus does not turn. Based on web searches, this appears to be a regular problem, even with the post-recall model.
cautious purchase paid off - nice trimmer September 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the trimmer last Sunday (Sept 7 '08) from HomeDepot and used it the same day. In short, this is a nice and powerful trimmer that worked well. I had a little bit of trouble screwing the front plastic guard thing in as the screw wouldn't line up with the second hole properly, but finally got it attached. The trimmer worked like it was supposed to and I am very happy with it.
From the reviews here I perceived there to be 2 defects with these trimmers; one that B&D handled by the recall and the other that they never admitted to (since people seemed to still have problems after), but fixed later, quietly, on the newly produced ones. For that reason I bought mine locally so I could return it if it was discovered to be the defective version.
Still no good after recall September 8, 2008 Avoid this trimmer. I just purchased this unit new. After my first use, I was very disappointed. I went online to check out what I could do to fix the line feeder. I found these Amazon reviews, and am thinking... "This thing is going back to the store." The two main problems I have experienced with this so called "fixed" trimmer are: 1. The line feeds too much. While doing typical grass and weed trimming, the line feeds out so much that I have hundreds of little 1" pieces of green line all over my lawn. I used up the stock line spool that came with the trimmer in about 5 minutes. 2. Several times the line fed out so fast that the cutter could not keep up with it. A tangled mass of line was whipping my legs. I had to cut the line and start over. These problems are not user error. This happened with this unit out of the box, with proper line, and proper technique. BTW I have the unit with the orange cover, not the recalled one with the black cover.
best trimmer/edger September 6, 2008 this is the greatest piece of outdoor equipment i've ever owned! if you don't like the noise of gas powered tools and don't mind the power cord this model is so easy to manage, works great and changes from edger to trimmer in a second! i highly recommend
Low reviews are from BEFORE a recall! August 18, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I almost turned my nose up at this when I saw the low review scores, but then read a few and noticed that all of the negative reviews are from before the product was recalled. So I went ahead and bought one based on newer reviews. After one use, I am thrilled. It worked perfectly and made short work of edging my entire lawn for the first time in years (went through grass as well as roots and dirt that had partially covered the sidewalk). It did require multiple passes at a few tough spots, and I had to learn the right angle to hold it at, but I think that was just from my own inexperience with this model--by the end of the job I was already having a far easier time. I've used a few other types before (all gas powered), and this was by far the most effective and easiest to use. One other thing to note--even if you don't get this one, buy a weedeater/edger with the .08 line, because it is much thicker and therefore you go through much less of it.
