Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Ranked "One of the best new Spring products" by Popular Science magazine, the NEUTON Cordless Electric Mower is ideal for people with quarter-acre or smaller lawns who don not want the headache, backache or hassle associated with gasoline powered mowers. With the NEUTON, there is no arm-yanking pull-starts...no messing with gas and oil...and no struggling with a heavy lawn mower. This lightweight wonder starts instantly with a gentle squeeze of the handlebar and runs for up to 1 hour on a single charge, and never needs a tune-up! And when it comes to mowing, the NEUTON is the easiest to use, quietest mower you've ever tried. It glides easily across your lawn and is 50% quieter than a gas lawn mower. But the NEUTON is more than just a lawn mower. This innovative machine also features an optional Trimmer/Edger Attachment that travels with the mower. The Trimmer/Edger Attachment uses a nylon cutting line to TRIM horizontally or at a 45 angle around trees and other obstacles. Or, set it vertically to EDGE along walks, drives, or planting beds. With the NEUTON Trimmer/Edger Attachment there's no need to fuss and strain with a gas-powered trimmer again! Features: 14 inch cutting width. Rear-discharge or bag. Easy single-point height adjustment. Includes charger. Arrives fully assembled.

3 out of 5 stars another new battery?   September 6, 2008

I bought the DR battery powered lawn mower seven years ago. I love everything about it except one thing. For the THIRD time I have to buy a new battery!! I have a very small yard and we had a terrible drought this year so I have only used the mower 3 times this summer. Yet the battery I bought last summer is dead already... For a $90.00 battery I do not feel like I got my moneys worth. Great mower, bad battery...

5 out of 5 stars Neuton 6.2 a Breath of Fresh Air   August 11, 2008

I bought the Neuton 6.2 earlier this summer to replace a hard to start, rough running, noisy gas mower. Their offer of 6 months free trial, and free extended warranty was too good to pass up. Well, I won't be returning the mower. The more I use it, the more I like it.

I did have a problem with the wheels and hubs when it first arrived, but they sent me out a replacement wheel kit right away. Looks like some of the wheels were made too narrow which caused the axel to pop off the plastic hub. No problems since I put on the new wheels. Also got a letter from them warning of a possible overheating problem at the safety key. I've not had that problem, but the key worked loose once causing the volt meter to fluctuate. Reset the key and was off again. Only happened once so far.

I timed my mowing time with the gas mower before it arrived and it takes slightly less than 1 hour to cut my grass. I fully expected to drain the battery when mowing the full yard, but so far, it has yet to even dip below the green. I was going to buy a second battery, but I don't think I'll need it. I also have a narrow section outside my fenced yard where I tend to let the grass grow high. Decided to try the mower on it and was amazed. It went through that tall grass (8"-16") without a hitch. Not sure my gas mower would have done as well.

There are some areas that need improvement though.
I find the grass bad steel frame to be too flimsy. As it loads up with grass, it sags and can drag on the grass as you back up or turn. I seem to have solved that problem for now by bending the frame slightly so that it rides higher at the back. I use it at its highest setting though, so it may still be a problem if the blade is set lower.
Also wish that the blade was set closer to the front. I know it was designed like this to allow space for the 4-wheel height adjuster (works great), but you have to maneuver the side of the mower against an object to get a close cut.
And speaking of height, I use the highest setting. In hot dry conditions, I like to keep the grass high to hold more moisture. I would like to cut it a little lower, but the next setting down it much too low. An infinite type adjuster would be great. It would allow for any height to be set.

That's all the negatives though. It's a great little mower and I expect it to last many years. Some of the other reviewers that had problems with short battery life are probably having a different problem than a battery problem. I wonder if they called Neuton? I have found the customer service to be outstanding.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this one.   August 6, 2008

I live in Bluffton SC. I received my Neuton CE 6.2 (19" cut) on April 2, 2008, and the edger package about 3 weeks later. Positives include quietness (similar to an electric edger), already assembled when received (only added the mulching plug), the voltage meter on the handle seems to be accurate, I can mow my whole yard without running out of power, one lever to change the height of the cut, the lack of gas/oil/sparkplug/filter, etc, and the ease of starting. However, I have several concerns about this product after several weeks of use.

First, the mower did only a fair job cutting grass. It failed to mulch properly in longer grass (1" cut). There may have been an electrical connection problem: sometimes when I moved the handle up and down, the motor went on and off. I have questions about durability; the body is made of plastic and hub caps fell off while in use. The CE 6.2 (at 69 pounds including battery) was nearly as heavy as a gas mower, so it took as much force to push it through grass. The electric system was susceptible to high temperatures; when I attempted to mow on a 90-degree day, the power cut off and I had to place the mower in shade to cool it off before finishing the job. I paid $484 for the mower alone. At that rate, I could get a top-of-the-line gas mower. In my opinion, the overall quality and performance did not justify the cost.

Second, the edger attachment did a poor job on straight line cuts, and was impossible to edge around curves. Using the edger exhausted a fully charged battery in 10 to 15 minutes. I usually had to follow up with a hand-held edger to cut edges missed by the Neuton. Overall, the edger attachment was unacceptable.

I finally decided to return the product for a full refund. When I called, they told me to package up the items as I had received them, and DR arranged for a UPS pick up which took about 8 days. The items arrived back at the factory a few days later, but it took 6 weeks after that for my full refund to show up on my credit account. One good point: I did not have to pay for any shipping.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time!   July 28, 2008

I purchased my Neuton last fall but did not have a chance to use it until this spring. I did purchase the accessory package but have not used the trimmer, edger, or mulching kit but have used the extra battery. Here is what I found out:

1. Quiet. Dosen't disturb the neighbors.
2. Cuts my lawn evenly. Looks great when I am done!
3. I use the bagger attachement and find it a bit small but that's okay with me but may be an inconvenience for others.
4. I have the smaller size Neuton but taking a little extra time with mowing does not bother me but that might bother other folks.
5. Very light and manuverable.
6. No smell, no gas fumes, no oil, no polution.
7. It does not handle heavy tall grass. So if you go away on vacation and your grass is tall(8") and thick when you return you might have a problem.
8. The battery is unbelievable! Recharges fast and easy and lasts, and lasts, and lasts (up to an hour and ten minutes depending on the height & thickness of your lawn).
9. Setting the wheel height is slick! One lever does it all.

I love it. I still have my gas mow probably not much longer.

1 out of 5 stars bad decision   July 21, 2008

I'm definitely into saving the earth, but this mower is not the machine to do it. Narrow cutting strip and battery had to be re-charged constantly (so much for conservation on electricity). Used it once and when we called to return it, Neuton charged $100 'processing' fee. Do not recommend dealing with this company. Find a more user-friendly product and company to go green.
