When caught out after dark on a hiking trip or forced into a few hours of late night skiing through backcountry terrain, a quality headlamp is essential. The Petzl e+Lite Headlamp serves either as your go-to back-up if your primary headlamp fails to perform, or functions as an ultra-light lighting alternative. About the same size as a sports watch, the Petzl e+Lite Headlamp weighs slightly less than an ounce with the lithium batteries installed. Including the hard plastic carrying case, the unit weighs just 1.62 oz., a small price to pay in the weight department when illumination is all that separates you from the trailhead or a warm sleeping bag. For the size, the Petzl e plus Lite Headlamp is more than adequate in a pinch. The three white LEDs throw a beam of 62 feet in maximum mode, or lights the route 36 feet ahead in economy mode. Built for tucking into a survival kit and then forgetting about it until the time comes that you need it, the e+Lite Headlamp has a shelf life of 10 years. It also features white and red strobe modes for rescue purposes, has an option to illuminate with the red LED alone to preserve night vision, and has a lock mechanism to keep the switch from accidentally turning on inside your backpack. The e+Lite's head strap also works as a wristband for mounting the light on the hand or forearm, and a clip allows for easy mounting on a hat, helmet, shirt or backpack shoulder strap. A ball joint attaches the lighting unit to a base where the strap is attached. This ball joint allows the Petzl e+Lite Headlamp to rotate a full 360 for unlimited aiming.

 Great backup light November 12, 2008
I use this headlamp primarily for backup purposes. I travel with one, and I also stick one in the car for emergencies. The lithium coin-type batteries are easy to obtain/replace, and the fact that they are lithium means they have a long shelf-life -- perfect for backup.
I've given out a bunch of these as gifts and the recipients seemed to use the light as a primary headlamp; they were very satisfied with its performance. I think there are better headlamps for off-trail use but in a pinch or as a backup this one can't be beat. I do feel that it is a bit pricey, however.

I was skeptical of getting a headlamp -- I thought it would be annoying and clunky, not worth strapping to my head rather than holding in my hand. Not true at all! This headlamp is super light, with a thin strap; while camping, I forgot I was wearing it. The switch is easy to use and has plenty of off stops (so you don't have to click past "bright white" to turn it off). It was perfect for walking on the established path between the campsite and the lake; it was also just right for reading in my tent and for checking under the seats before returning a rental car. I love that it has both white and red settings (so you can preserve your night vision for stargazing), and I figure the flashing settings will be handy at some point for making me visible when walking on dark streets. I don't think I'd be comfortable walking through the woods (without a path) with this light -- on its high beam, it may not be bright enough to keep a careful eye both on the ground and on eye-level branches. But I haven't tried, and it might be fine. I think this headlamp is perfect for anyone who doesn't want a floodlight when camping and hiking.

Pleased with this purchase. It's everything it said it was. Very compact and light. Cons: The switch is akward to use when on. Turn it on before placing it on your head. I wish the light was brighter. Close task lighting suits this light.

My girlfriend bought one for me last Christmas and I loved it. I then bought one for her birthday last month. For the money, it's one of the best on the market. Lightweight, compact, and bright. Also, batteries are included and it only requires two. Some headlamps require 4 bulky AAA; not this one. I highly recommend this product.
