Great for the submarine environment June 28, 2008 I serve on a submarine in the Navy. These things are great, especially at periscope depth when the lights are dimmed so the officer of the deck doesn't get blinded when he uses the periscope. When we do that red lights are the only thing authorized. This thing clips right on the collar button hole on the Navy coveralls, which is very convenient!
lightweight and simple February 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of the best designs I've found on the market for a lightweight LED light. However, it is still in need of improvements. The light has various settings, which are controlled by a microchip. Push the button once for high intensity, twice for low intensity, and 3 times for strobe mode. The high intensity setting will stay on for 3 minutes and then automatically switch to low. The low intensity and strobe settings will stay on as long as they have battery power. A problem with this on/off setting is that the light tends to turn itself by bumping up against things, particularly if you carry it in your pocket. To remedy this you can switch the light to work in a push-button mode, but there is no quick way to switch between the on/off and push-button modes. This means that you have to choose between the hands-free convenience of the on/off mode, or the push-button mode where you won't accidentally run down your batteries. It is easy to open the light and install new batteries if need be. It takes two flat batteries. The light is not waterproof and so if it gets wet the microchip that controls the light settings could be damaged. In summary, it is a great light, but could use a simple O-ring seal to make it waterproof and a feature to prevent the light from turning on by itself when in the on/off mode. With these improvements it would become a standard item for every survival kit and outdoor adventure, not to mention everyday use.
Poor switch design ruins an otherwise good product. January 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Lightweight, surprisingly bright for their size and really handy, thse lights would be a great buy if they didn't suffer from one fatal flaw: their switches appear to be very poorly designed or constructed.
I purchaced three of these for stocking stuffers in addition to one for myself. One has already died due to a stuck 'on' switch. Mine seems to turn on if it's breathed on (VERY sensitive switch). So we're batting .500 with less than one month's use.
As such, I cannot recommend these minilights.
