3 out of 5 stars Quiet, but some annoyances   November 11, 2008
I got this fan because I wanted something quieter than the usual rattling jet engine to avoid disturbing the neighbors at night. And it is indeed pretty quiet, though "whisper" is perhaps a bit exaggerated. Of course only time will tell if it remains quiet or gets noisy as it wears in. Also, even on low, it generates a nice amount of close-in heat, just what I want.

On the other hand, the single-button control is a pain in the neck. You have to cycle through up to 12 settings to reach whichever you want (hi, low, 5 thermostat settings each at hi and low). If you accidentally go past the one you want, .... To turn it off (the superstitious may be interested that this makes 13 total states ;-) you have to hold down the one button for several seconds. I may eventually get used to this, but haven't yet, and so find myself cycling through all those settings again. grrrrr. And all that button pushing seems guaranteed to wear it out sooner than a better designed system would .. what ever happened to good old fashioned switches? Like an on/off, a toggle for hi/low, and something separate for thermostat? Ah yes, the imperative of lowest possible cost with maximum useless features.

Another problem no one has mentioned is that there is no handle or indentation to pick the bloody thing up with. Every other space heater I've used has something so that you can move it easily with one hand. The Whisper Quiet has two indentations on the sides, intended for two handed use. One handed is possible if you just want to scooch it over, but very awkward.

I don't use or intend to use the thermostat feature (which makes having to cycle past these settings doubly annoying), but anyone who expects a sensor mounted on the heating device to give accurate whole room readings should think about it again. Plus, in a small device like this, the very act of the heater being on will affect the sensor.

As several reviewers mentioned, I also found this much cheaper locally, especially when shipping is figured in from amazon; plus there was a rebate.

In summary, the quietest fan forced heater I've seen, at least in its size (I have a large tower heater that is pretty quiet, but wouldn't work for the room intended), but has several annoyances. Maybe next time I'll investigate a radiant panel heater ... I notice browsing amazon that they seem to have come down in cost. Unfortunately, they don't seem readily available locally.

1 out of 5 stars Never again   October 23, 2008
I purchased this heater in hopes to heat a medium-sized bedroom. Turned in on once for about 15 minutes to learn how it works. Turned it off and unplugged it - as I won't sleep with a space heater on during the night. Got up the next morning and turned it on. Within 7 minutes, flames were burning the plastic housing. Fortunatley, I was in the room and smelled the plastic. I removed my cat from the area and took care of the flames. I've written to the MFG to let them know about the incident - never heard back from them. I'm pretty sure I won't be purchasing any Holmes products in the future! I strongly urge everyone to be cautious when using any type of space heater...may you not pay a big price for a litle warmth.

2 out of 5 stars Gives infrequent, insufficient bursts of warm air   September 21, 2008
I got this at Rite Aid to keep me warm at night. I specifically chose this fan heater because of its thermostat feature so that my room wouldn't get too hot overnight.

I tried setting the thermostat to 70 degrees, but when that didn't satisfy me, I set it to 80 on high. This thing behaves ridiculously. It'll turn on for a minute or so, but then it'll off for about a half hour before starting up again. Even with it set at 80 degrees, the room can't have been more than 72 degrees when I awoke in the morning. I don't think it ever gets up to 80 degrees before shutting off again. I'll be returning this to the store.

The 1 Touch control sounds simple and convenient, but it's actually a bit of a hinderance to have to cycle through a dozen options. A plus is that the fan really is considerably quiet (though, on low, it has an eerie buzz to it).

2 out of 5 stars A few problems   April 21, 2008

I bought this heater in December '07.

On the plus side:

It's quiet.
It puts out a good amount of heat when it's on.

On the negative side:

The thermostat is quite inaccurate. Its 80 degrees is more like 72 degrees.
There is no way to keep the heater on all the time. Even in non-thermostat mode, it shuts itself off when the room temperature reaches 75 degrees. It will not turn itself on again until the room cools down AND the heater is turned off then back on.
After about 3 months, the single control button started malfunctioning. It either will not register a push or registers multiple pushes per per push. It makes operation an annoying guessing game.

I don't recommend this heater.

5 out of 5 stars No Noise Please   March 7, 2008
This heater warms the room very evenly; my husband and I use it in our home office (12 x 14 room). We have tried many different heaters only to find them either too noisy or too directional leaving parts of the room too hot or cold. This small in size heater puts out plenty of heat and has a very, very, small sound level that is actually pleasant for background noise while reading or doing computer work. We were so impressed that we bought a second one for our bedroom. We have lowered our furnace temperature and now use the heater to keep individual rooms comfortable. We both feel it is a good product and would recommend it to friends or family.
