 Works well but requires some practice and careful technique March 21, 2008
I used this face-nailing adaptor to install Brazilian Walnut and was impressed with it's utility AFTER I marred several pieces during practice runs.
I recommend using this tool in conjunction with the "Porta-JACK Pro" floor jack tool (see my review), as installing the jack in place on the flooring surface provides a solid anchor point for the face nailer. Slide the face nailer right up against the jack and push against to to hold it rock steady. See my pics above from a recent red oak floor install.
I used a short-handled hammer (not the one that comes with the nailer) for better control. Use the toe of your foot to press nailer against jack and use off-hand to press down on handle of nailer. Use dominant hand on hammer and nail STRAIGHT down on the ram, avoiding angled blows.
Slide the nailer to the other side of the jack, repeat steps above and nail again. Release the jack and slide it down the board about 6" and reset the jack. Repeat procedure until all nails are in.
Using this technigue with the jack means the boards are pressed tightly together and the nailer does not slip while driving the nail. You can quickly face-nail boards with a professional result.
It is difficult to use the face-nailer well without the jack, but you will get better with time, the key being the use of a short-handled hammer that lets you get your body weight directly over the nailer, pressing down with your off-hand as you nail. Don't hit yourself with the hammer if you have your face directly over the ram on your up-swing, as it hurts.....

The face nailer did not work well with Brazillian cherry 3/4 inch hardwood. I ws installing the wood on an old floor that had some "bounce" so nailing near the wall proved impractical. The unit gave too much bounce and marred the surface. I resorted to pre-drililng these courses (or strips) and face nailing with finishing nails. Slow and painful but a nice result.
