Nice September 6, 2008 I'm currently using this thumb drive between computers and for school. I really like the retractable port; that was a big sell point for me, especially because I need to travel around with it from home to school and back.
I removed the U3 stuff as I didn't see the need to have any sort of third party launcher. When it had initially launched, it asked if I wanted to use the application or not. Naturally I said no, and I discovered that it created a file that would allow me to rescind that response at a later time. There is also a ready-made Documents directory on the drive. I pretty much deleted everything as I am an experienced directory/folder user and don't really need any extras.
The one issue I have with this drive is insertion into the USB port. Unless I'm holding the slider in place, it's difficult to insert the drive into the port. I'm concerned that I'm actually pressing down too hard on the unit when doing this, and am afraid that I might break the unit.
The slider also acts as the unit-in-use/plugged-into-port indicator. Previous thumb drives I've had either had no LED indicator or one that was so tiny it was easy to overlook. Because the whole slider unit lights up, it's a welcome change.
The ring is quite thin and flimsy. It's not something you would want to use if you're the type of person who places your thumb drive on your keychain.
Other than my fear of breaking it and the flimsy ring, this is a really nice product, and I'm quite please with it.
8GB SanDisk Cruze Micro September 6, 2008 The 8GB SanDisk Cruze Micro is everything I expected. It is more compact and effortless to use. I use several types of computers between work and home and I have not had a problem with compatability. I especially like the retractable USB connection, because I can't tell you how many of the "little" caps that I have lost or missplaced. It is definitely an outstanding feature. Absolutely a thumbs up!!
Good memory stick with very annoying flashing light September 6, 2008 I have nothing against this memory stick except the big light that takes up most of the top of the stick. It is continuously on and frequently flashes when the stick is mounted. As far as I can tell there is no way to turn it off. It can quickly become very annoying. The only solution I found was to plug the stick in the back of my laptop, where it is invisible. Next time, I'm definitely buying less flashy stick.
DON'T BUY THIS September 5, 2008 This is the worst experience I ever had with a flash drive.
Four corrupt files later (never had that happen before), it required formatting(!). Great! Now, EVERYTHING is GONE.
But wait...that's what Tech Support told me to do. Happily, I had most of the important stuff backed up...but WOW. And when I explained that I wanted a refund, they told me it was WORKING FINE!!! FINE?!? My data is GONE! How is that FINE?!
Great little All in One Resource Device, for your Data & Programs September 4, 2008 As I started writing this review, I almost knocked off one star (down to 4), because the casing is just a little flimsy...not bad, but you have to treat it nicely. Also, the thumb switch is really cool, until you start trying to plug it into ports, on multiple computers. Some Dell ports are a nightmare. However I learned, a long time ago, to always carry a small USB extension, after watching a former boss dirty his knees, each day, trying to plug in his USB flash drive.
The sliding thumb switch issue is easily resolved, by keeping a short extension handy, and the main reason I am not reducing the number of stars is due to one, important factor:
I have accidentally washed this thumb drive, several times, due to lack of sleep (college), and/or not drinking enough coffee, before starting laundry.
Each time, the drive has not only survived (though I had to use a hair dryer, to dry it up, once!)...but it has always performed without any problems.
The case may seem a bit flimsy, but it seems to lock out the water, and prevents the chips from being drenched!
Also, the U3 system is very nice. You can import email, or do a quick Thunderbird "hack" to transfer your email, into the drive. You can walk around with all of your bookmarks saved, and all of the U3 options make college life much easier! If you are doing a big research project, U3 is the way to go. You can bookmark, save, download, email, use your college website, and the Library resources...save all of your work...and dash off, to class.
Same with office workers. Just plug in the U3, and enter your password, if you keep it locked, then open your Apps, and you can "pick up where you left off," as they say around this area.
However, if you want more storage space, and more options.... Please see my review for Corsair 32GB Flash Voyager USB 2.0 Flash Drive - CMFUSB2.0-32GB.
