Amazon.com Review
Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a 1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step up from Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with the professional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head, a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There's also a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piece fence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuck key/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, and Delta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inch chisel and bit sets. Beats a drill and hand chisel any day! --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5 out of 5 stars Buy this tool in a retail store, not from Amazon   September 30, 2008
After seeing a demo and using this tool, I decided to buy one for myself. From my brief exposure I can say that this is a well-designed mortiser with an excellent table & fence system that produces great results when used properly. There are better mortisers on the market if you are doing high volume production work and want to spend 3 or 4 times the price, but if you are a home woodworker, you will not be disappointed in this machine.

I am not sure how to rate it. I give the tool 5 stars as long as you buy it in a retail store and not online. I give it 1 star if purchased from Amazon. I bought it from Amazon because it was a little cheaper than buying it locally and I have had great luck with buying tools from Amazon in the past. When I got it, the cast iron column was split into two pieces. This tool is packaged in a very flimsy cardboard box with no banding (it will obviously be dropped by most UPS facilities), it has very flimsy styrofoam packaging, and the thin & brittle cast iron parts of the column and connections between the motor and brace are wedged together in the box. I opted for a refund from Amazon rather than a replacement because I cannot see how a heavy cast iron tool that is packaged this poorly would ever arrive undamaged when shipped by UPS Ground.

3 out of 5 stars good machine after manufacturing flaw repaired   September 23, 2008
I have always liked Delta Products and own quite a few of them so when I decided on a mortiser this was the first one that I checked out. After comparing features and prices with other models I ordered one from homedepot.com (free shipping). When I recieved it the carton was mint and the machine looked fine. A very heavy and stable machine for the price. After trying it out I noticed i was having trouble getting the chuck to tighten up on the bit also the bit seemed to be off center and was very noisy and there was drag. After looking over the machine I determined that the motor was not seating level in the base. I tried tighting the mounting screws , but not so tight as to cause damage, but no luck. I removed the motor from the base and found the recess that the motor was supposed to fit in was too small (only by a small fraction but enough to cause problems). I spent some time with a round file very carefully going around the recess until the motor seated properly. It took some time but now it works good even though the supplied bits are only of average quality. I have to say I was dissapointed because whoever assembled this one I'm sure knew this was a problem but let it go. A consumer should not have to start doing repar work to a brand new prduct. I gues that's what happens when you outsource out of the country. I wounder if this is why some people complained of broken flanges. If I had tried to really crank down on the mounting screws to level the motor I'm sure the flange would have broken. How about some quality control Delta? I know outsourcing means higher profits but if the Delta name suffers is it worth it. A brand new out of the box product should never have had this problem although I like the machine very much now that it works properly.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS ITEM AT ALL COST!   September 12, 2008
As with so many other people that have purchased this item, it arrived broken. Mine was broken in the same place as the customer photo shows, a major cast iron section. They either aren't packaging these correctly for shipping or sending them back out after they've been returned as damaged. In either case, you don't save enough money buying it from Amazon to make it worth the extra headache and time of returning it, especially since it is so heavy (80 lbs). You're better off just buying one locally if you can.

UPDATE: I received a replacement. Amazon makes the process pretty painless. Unfortunately, the replacement was broken as well. I got my money back.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrated   March 2, 2008

Avoid this tool at all cost. I purchased one 2 months ago, uncrated and set it up yesterday and used it for the first time today. On the fourth mortise cut, the handle flopped freely and the head stopped in position. Unable to raise or lower the head with the handle, I removed the head from the stand. Upon examination of the gear mechanism I discovered that the pin that holds the gear to the handle had sheared off. I had not really stressed the machine at all so the failure was inexplicable. I've never been a fan of Delta tools and this experience proved my worst fears. Buyer beware.

4 out of 5 stars Mortiser good; delivery poor   March 2, 2008
I would recommend the Delta 14-651 mortiser and would buy it again. I was able to complete the setup and adjustments fairly quickly and with a little practice could cut good mortises even in red and white oak with the starter chisels provided. The owners manual is not very instructive and glosses over some important adjustments. You will have to figure out your own methods to attach the hydraulic cylinder and to loosen the sliding of the head against the column. My mortiser arrived with the head adjusted so tightly that, even with no cutting involved, it took all my strength just to lower it on the column. You will need your own 6mm allen wrench and will have to experiment as the manual is vague on this point.

My main problem was with delivery. I opted for Amazon's free delivery and the product arrived on a Friday as promised. But the box delivered by UPS was badly beat-up and marked with caution tape. It had a suspicious metallic rattle. On opening, I found that the box had been dropped from height at some point and that the 1/4 inch cast metal of the mortiser head on the left side was fatally cracked through, leaving a loose gib piece to bang around inside the box. I contacted Amazon for a damage-based return and was routed to a hard-to-understand, fast-talking overseas operator. During a very long phone call, I agreed to accept a replacement unit only if I could receive free 2-day shipping. The broken unit was picked up by UPS on Monday and the replacement unit delivered as promised by FedEx on Tuesday. The replacement unit was in an obviously newer box with a much less violent history. I would warn Amazon buyers to be wary of delivery problems.
