not a heavy duty cutter March 6, 2010 Patrick Flynn (Boston, MA USA) I'm sure this is fine to cut cardboard, however it is not a good idea to buy this for anything more than small projects. I tried to cut vinyl tile with this and it chokes up every few seconds, causing me to go back to using a normal razor blade for better accuracy.
A Must Have for Cardboard boxes February 16, 2010 E. Tanner Skil 2352-01 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion Multi-Cutter. Note that I only have used this item for breaking down boxes from our business shipments. I was tired of cutting down boxes using a standard box-cutter blade, for flat packing.
For single-wall cartons, this cutter slices through the box folds/creases with ease, like pushing an self-powered lawnmower.
For single-wall cartons, cuts not-along the box folds, are still a breeze, with minimal effort.
Double-wall shipping cartons require a tad bit more effort to push the cutter, but nothing worth complaining about for a battery powered hand-cutter.
I have yet to find a battery-powered cutter that performs better then this model. I cut a few hundred boxes a week, about 20" cubed or larger, and have no complaints. With 30 minute box cutting sessions per day, I only have to recharge this cutter at the end of each week. The power indicator turns red, when you need a charge, just like a beard shaver.
Definately recommended for breaking down single or doublewall shipping cartons.
Limited Skil Mult-Cutter January 29, 2010 S. Diamond (Oak Park, IL United States) From several other reviews, this best serves as a glorified box cutter for cutting thin cardboard for the recycle bin or for opening clam shell packaging. The design and safety features means you have to start your cut from the edge of the material. The safety design makes it almost impossible to do plunge cutting away from the edge. Also, the dead man's switch makes handling the tool awkward for any precision cutting. The cutting might be more precise if used with a straight edge. The user manual provides no information for ordering a new blade when it gets dull, nor is it listed a a replacement accessory on the Skil site. Finally, the charger is a flimsy plug in type.
Cuts through numerous sheets of paper like butter December 13, 2009 emufan01 (Rochester, NY) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm an academic and have moved over to reading and storing all of my literature electronically. I find it much easier to search for what I need this way, and I can add and remove comments and highlighting as I please. Now, my documents are quickly available with a few clicks of my mouse, rather than rummaging through my file cabinet. Plus, I can do text searches to find the information I need within my documents quickly. This is not to mention the benefits to the environment of cutting down fewer trees.
In any event, my current library includes many books. In order to add these to my digital library, I have to remove the bindings and scan the pages through our department's copier, so the book can be emailed as a PDF to my computer (which I then run through an OCR program to make searchable). I was having great difficulty trying to remove the bindings. At first I used scissors, but this wasn't very efficient, because I can only cut through small stacks of paper at a time. However, this handy little tool makes cutting through 40+ pages a breeze. Using this multi-cutter, I can have a book ready for copying within just a few minutes!
I don't have any experience using this took with other media, however; I know from experience that trying to cut through large numbers of sheets of paper at once is very difficult. Just look at how expensive half-decent paper guillotines are that cut through more than 15-20 sheets of paper ($100 minimum at your local office supply store). They seem way over-priced to me, especially compared to this little machine.
Count me as a very satisfied customer!
needs a little tooling December 12, 2009 Ron Davis (New Mexico) I purchased this device for my work. I make signs for a leading Beer company.I need something to cut poster board and paper, so i decided to try the skil out.It does a good job on cutting the material except it wants to lift the material towards the blade making it hard to cut a straight line.I also purchased a Black and Decker cordless sissors, that does a wonderful job cutting a straight line for less than half the price of the Skil. The Skil has an advantage though. It can cut through thicker material like coreplast which is a plastic poster board.I like the Skil for this reason so I am happy with both tools. I would recommend that If the skil had a thinner feed line, that it would be easier to cut a straight line making it superior over other cutters.I like the long life on the battery between charging, and the auto sharpening is a plus.Over all this is a good product other than the feeding line to cut a straight line without moving at a snails pace, I still would recommend it for cutting thicker materials. Its a jewel for that.
