 Overpriced with limited usefulness November 2, 2009

People have a passion for machines that replace hand tools, even though the machines are not as efficient or labor saving as the hand tools they replace. The Skil Mult-cutter is one of those tool. It is one expensive knife. For the most part the Skill Multi-cutter doesn't do anything that one could not do faster with a box cutter or scissors. It is awkward to use because the user must take time to cope with the safety features. But one thing it does and does well is open blister or hard shell packaging which is difficult to do with either a knife or scissors. Otherwise, it often jams cutting cross-ways on thick corrugated cardboard boxes and stops cutting. For me, the tool was a big disappointment. It does have a long life battery and a self sharpening cutting wheel but when the wheel wears out, which it will, there is no replacement. Another much needed improvement would be to have a button to lock it in the On position while is running.

I bougth this as a Gift for My Mom to cut clothes and i was surprised how strong is it it can cut much more than clothes!!

Read some of the reviews and was a little undecided. Went ahead and ordered and it works just as described. Cut down quite a few boxes so they can be recycled. But best feature was opening those ridiculous plastic packages. Zip it was open. NO fighting the shears, or using a utility knife. All and all it was a great purchase and with lithium ion it should last quite awhile between charges. As a side note also used it on some zip ties didn't force it but just took my time and there off.Skil 2352-01 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion Multi-Cutter
Not quite sure why a refurbed unit is over 90.00 dollars?

Going on six months now with this tool. There is NOTHING better for cutting open those infuriating packages encased in that impenetrable plastic. The battery lasts a VERY long time--just recharged after infrequent use over the past four months. It may not cut everything but for me, it is well worth the reduced price at Amazon (now less than $50) simply for the packages it opens.

I was expecting the ergonomics of this to be similar to the ergonomics of the Skil cordless screw driver, which is a pleasure to handle - this is not.
This was tiring just to experiment with. It is very unbalanced from left to right, you have to hold it "up" horizontally. It is not well balanced from front to back either, so you are working to keep it just so. I had a hard time controlling it to keep on a straight run. If you have small hands, you need 2 hands to get it out of safety mode as your thumb will not reach the safety latch and the go trigger at the same time - perfect if you are worried about kids getting to it. This is a man's rough cutter for straight runs, perhaps. For the average woman to use for fabric, wrapping paper, drawer lining - not at all. Sending it back.
