| Customer Reviews: wood lathe October 19, 2009 Martin Patton (Fairview Park, Ohio USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The lathe arrived at the local UPS less than truckload freight terminal three days after I placed the order. Dock workers used a forklift to load up my borrowed pickup truck. The lathe was bolted down inside a very serious plywood crate with no damage apparent on the outside. Plywood used to make the crate is approved by the state of California for something related to air quality, I can't remember what. At home, I opened the crate while it was still sitting in the pickup truck. The nuts that hold the tail stock and the banjo (tool rest) to the lathe had loosened in shipping resulting in some minor paint chipping.
The lathe weighs about 300 pounds. Broken into six major pieces, it is pretty easy the carry to the workshop for assembly. It is easy to assemble. The mechanical variable speed control works well and changes speed quickly. Speeds from about 620 to 2860 rpm are available in 10 steps. It doesn't go slow enough for larger diameter turnings, but covers the spindle turning and small bowl range very well. The paint finish is very good. Clamp levers on the tool rest are plastic and I think one is stripped already (-Grizzly, I'll be calling you about that-). The tool rest is also a little too flexible in my opinion.
Anyway, I turned some spindles and the lathe did very well. I cut up a maple log to make some spalted bowls about 6" in diameter. The headstock vibrated a little when I was roughing them out and the motor warmed up a little. Plenty of torque for small bowls.
Overall, I'm happy that I bought this lathe. The price was very low and the quality is good (with the noted exceptions on the tool rest). The variable speed with no belt changes is a time saving feature that I think Grizzly should make more of in marketing the machine. This is my second Grizzly machine. The first is a thickness planer that is now about 10 years old and running fine. The other machines in my shop are old USA Delta and new Chinese Delta. I still prefer the old USA Delta, but can't find much of it anymore.
Great lathe at a great price May 28, 2008 M. Shue (Stateside) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I purchased this lathe in December of 2007 so I've had it for about 6 months. I paid less than $500 shipped which I think has increased slightly since, but would still by the lathe again at the new price.
When the Lathe arrive, very quickly after ordering, I wasted no time in getting it set up. I did it myself by attaching one leg at a time. Two people would make it go faster, but if you can lift a hundred pounds give or take you can do it with one. 8 bolts is all it takes to be up and running.
The lathe I received had a bad motor. It started fine when I set it up and I turned a small bowl very quickly with it. When I came back a couple hours later, it would not spool up to more than 800rmp and had no torque. Likely the winding were bad, but I've seen similar problems on the occasional high end tool also. A quick email to Griz and I had a new headstock/motor on the way in short order with them covering all the fees both ways. Top notch service.
Since then, I've used the lathe at least three times a week for 6 months and have been extremely happy with it. It is a solid machine, that will turn spindles as is with little to no vibration. For larger pieces I suggest making a shelf (the legs are designed for it) and add some weight. This is similar to the similar Jet and Powermatic designs.
If you are considering purchasing a lathe, Grizzly will put you in touch with someone locally who owns the lathe (or other tool) you are intersested in if you give them a call. I think it says a lot that their customers (myself included) are willing to talk to others about the lathes they own.
