Amazon.com Product Description
Leatherman packs the full-size Skeletool with the tools you're likely to use most often. | Introducing the Brand New Skeletool CX from Leatherman Get back to basics -- the very cool basics -- with Leatherman's Skeletool CX. Today's outdoor enthusiasts want to keep weight and volume to a minimum without sacrificing quality and true functionality, and that's what the Skeletool is all about. Many multitools have multiple options, but they're often heavier -- and they're loaded with more features than most people actually need on a regular basis. Conversely, pocket knives are light and streamlined, but they render themselves useless when the task calls for a more versatile tool. Enter the new Skeletool platform, offering minimal weight, compact size and endless capabilities. Key User Features The Skeletool CX has a large knife blade that can be accessed while the tool is closed; to open it, just place your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade and rotate it out until it's fully extended -- which will engage the safety lock. This locking mechanism is noted with a padlock symbol on the tool. To unlock the blade, press the locking mechanism towards the handle until the blade slides past the lock. Equipped with a universal bit driver, the Skeletool offers real utility options like no other multitool. To change the tool bits, simply unfold the tool and remove the bit from the bit driver -- and pop it out. And replacing bits is just as easy. Just press a new one into position and you're good to go. There's even a spare bit located in the handle side opposite the knife blade. This tool includes the following bits: Phillips #1 and #2, screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch. In the plier jaws you'll find a hard-wire cutter and a regular wire cutter. The regular wire cutter is great for softer grades of wire, but the hard-wire cutter is excellent for heavier jobs -- like cutting and bending fishhooks. Multitool Capabilities: The Skeletool keeps it simple -- and light, and compact, and easy to transport. Why waste time with pointless, heavy add-ons when all the basics are right at your fingertips? With its open hardware, skeletal design and hardy appearance, the Skeletool boasts a premium stainless steel blade, pliers, a universal bit driver, and a carabiner/bottle opener ... and that's it. Key Tech Specs: - Length: 4 inches/10 cm closed
- Weight: 5 ounces/142 grams
- Materials: Stainless steel, Tungsten DLC coating, 154CM, carbon fiber (handle scale)
- Included Bits: Phillips #1 and #2, Screwdriver 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

Practical compromise April 29, 2008 I've had a few different cheapie multi-tools and finally decided to break down and go for a more practical, higher quality tool.
The CX is a nice compromise, easy to use, light, compact, and packing the most commonly needed features. I'd say for the most part I am looking at it as a pocket knife replacement, and in that function it is good, but not perfect.
The blade is a little small for the overall package size, and it is still a just a tad too heavy/bulky for daily carrying (imho). Looking at the unit it seems like a 1/2" or so could be removed without much impact, and then I think it'd be perfect.
The build is solid, and I haven't had the problem with the bit storage as some others have noted. But I do notice that the bit storage wall can be bent in a little to snug up the retention, and it goes to show that some units might have a looser retention than others. So I could see how it could be a problem particularly if you have a lot of other stuff floating around in your pockets.
If the tools included make sense to you, this is a solid unit.
Overall, pretty straightforward. If the tools fit your needs, the build quality is there. It just depends if the compromises in tools available is worth it to you.
My First Leatherman April 29, 2008 After waiting months for delays, I finally received the Skeletool CX. I must say that this tool has plenty of function and design. Here is what I have noticed:
- The knife is plenty sharp and locks nicely in to place - The pliers work well, but i tend to pinch my hand almost every time I use them. This happens because of the design of the handle (reason I gave it 4 stars) - I love the bottle opener, great feature. -The screwdriver works good, but not perfect. Its a little awkward to use. - The belt clip works good and holds snug - The coating on this tool is very nice, as is the fit and finish.
All in all, this tool does a lot of things good, but nothing great. But that is what you would expect from a multi-tool. It is very convenient to use and I look forward to getting years of use out of it. I would recommend this to anyone in the market.
Worth the wait April 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This light weight comprehensive tool is all that it promised. This will reduce the bulk and weight in my travel kit. Now I just need a reason to bring it out. Like the extended grip on one side to give more leverage when it is needed and teh almost needle nose end makes it useful for getting into tight spots
the best leatherman ever? April 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I honestly think this is my favorite leatherman ever. I have owned a couple pst's, a blast and most recently a charge alx. These were all great but they always seemed a little overkill for what I needed. When I saw this one though on their site I just knew I had to have it only to find out they were backordered everywhere. So I persevered with my charge alx until the backorder ended. Man was it worth the wait. It is absolutely perfect. I fits great in my acu pockets. The caribiner clip attaches to anything from my belt loops when I ride my sportbike to my backpack and anything in between. The spring mechanism is super strong and you don't need to worry about it coming loose. As other people have stated the mechanism is a little tight but it loosen up quick. The knife blade slides out nice and smooth too. I think this is down to the bronze bushings similar to other leathermans. The only downsides I can state but none really are any shortcomings. The first is that the lightweight makes the skeletool seem not as sturdy as other leatherman offerings but once you admire it and really look at it you realize that this is not the case. It is extremely well made and feels solid while you use it. This also leads into the next "shortcoming". It is too damn beautiful. I catch myself just admiring it. The carbon fiber accents the black coating (which is very durable. I believe it is similar to a coating used on sportbike cylinder walls if that gives you any indication of the durability.) so gorgeously. It gives a look similar to a stealth bomber. You better get used to coworkers wanting to look at it if you own one. All in all I say to anyone sitting on the ledge that I is worth every penny. I think leatherman has finally built the perfect everyday multitool. Lightweight, sexy and just the right amount of functionality.
P.S. I noticed that another reviewer was complaining about the bit storage retainer. I think he might have gotten a defective one but I do see how it could happen with the design however mine stays in perfect and doesn't come out unless you want it to.
Great Tool April 10, 2008 Great product. It has all the tools I use most on a regular leatherman. (I dont think i've ever used a file or an awl for anything). The blade snaps out without you having to fight the tool open first. very light very small. TERRIBLE buying experience! pre ordered it back in November of 07 then they tried to jack the price up, ended up cancelling my order, found it for $80 at an REI outlet store.
