About Makita's 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT Series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18V compact lithium-ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five-times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5X more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and 16 firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18V compact lithium-ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V compact lithium-ion batteries that plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Worth it's weight in gold. November 17, 2009 Russell Breck Having seen this driver in action and having read the reviews, I purchased this with high expectations...it has lived up to those expectations. I was fed up with stripped screws using my cordless drill and I wanted something that would eliminate that problem. I needed to put up some temporary staging/scaffolding (consisting of 2x4's and 3/4" plywood)in my great room in order to hang a pool table light above a pool table that I did not want to move. The ceiling height was 13' and I wanted to make something sturdy. This driver easily put 3" screws in without stripping a single one. I was also able to easily hold the driver over my head to screw as well. After the light was installed and I needed to break down the staging, it removed all screws painlessly and all lumber and screws can be re-used. Ready for the next project! Absolutely a five star rating!!!
Excellent product November 12, 2009 Rooper (Connecticut) Lightweight and very powerful -- has made d-i-y jobs very easy for this homeowner. Would definitely recommend it, and would definitely buy another Makita product.
Can remove lug nuts October 7, 2009 Rob (California, USA) I inserted one of those Dewalt impact ready 1/4 hex to 1/2 inch adapters on the collar and then put my 21mm impact socket on it to remove a set of wheels torqued at around 80 ft lbs. On a couple of wheels, it can take few seconds but the lugnut will eventually come off. This Makita driver says it can do around 1200 inch pounds (which is around 100 foot pounds) of torque, and it can definitely do what it says. When tightening the lugnuts using an 80 ft lb torque limiting stick, the Makita impact driver managed to torque them all to 80 ft lbs. I also tried removing my van's lugnut which is torqued to 94 ft lbs and uses a 22mm socket, and this little guy can also remove that too! It's amazing what this tiny tool can do!
The good thing about impact drivers is no matter how tight a bolt/screw is, it does not take anymore extra energy to drive the bolt because it uses the hammering action. Comparing this to a regular drill, the tighter the bolt, the more energy the drill uses, and hence more battery drain. So even though I used the Makita impact driver to remove 4 set of wheels, I'm sure it still has enough juice to remove wheels on another few cars and to think this driver only uses the smaller compact 1.5Ah battery compared with the 3.0Ah batteries used on their LXT models.
The only thing I would point out is when you are driving screws for delicate projects, this impact driver might be a bit too powerful. You have to be very careful and have good control with it. Still, I don't know how I used to get by without this handy little monster. Everyone should have one of these in their tool arsenal.
Great Driver September 28, 2009 Wednesday Volunteer (Dallas, TX) The Makita 18V Impact Driver is a great tool. It is compact and light weight. It drives 3" screws with ease. I puchased it about 3 weeks ago. My only complaint is that it didn't come with a belt clip. The lithium-ion batteries are a big plus. They charge in about 15 minutes.
beware, this thing is a minuature monster August 27, 2009 james (San Francisco, CA United States) I use it mainly to drive 2 inch screws into decking, as well as hex head self tapping metal and concrete screws.
Once you hit bottom, and you hear the hammer kick in and the drill starts making that loud rattle noise- you better be careful of what you're doing otherwise this little beastie has so much torque it will literally rip the heads off of screws without you feeling any kickback.
As long as you understand that fact, this can be the only drill you need. You can use this bad boy to drive concrete screws without pre-drilling pilot holes.
It's about 50 bucks cheaper than when I bought it, and I can't recommend it enough. I do theater set construction as a side job and almost everyone has a makita impact driver.. When you have to build 40 flats you need a driver that makes it easy on your arm. The few people who don't own a makita impact driver inevitably try to borrow yours, or they buy one of their own after just putting in a few screws.
In fact, most of the tool rooms at theaters don't keep these things in storage because they get stolen! All the carpenters bring their own and just ignore the drills in the tool rooms.
My only complaint is that the paint on the makita logo flecks off with even the lightest touch. After using it for a week all the pain is gone. But we buy this thing for how it works, not how it looks.
