Amazon.com Product Description Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air. The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The alarm uses different 85-decibel horns and lights depending on whether it's alerting you to smoke or carbon monoxide. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander What's in the Box One combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarm, two AA batteries, and user's manual

Good basic warning device November 21, 2009 Ralph Arthur I almost bought the SC07CN combo alarm but got frustrated with all the extra bells and whistles that added complicated features like remote and voice. I believe the SC05CN is all a person needs to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning and smoldering type fires. A person should also have a detector that detects hot flaming fires like the ionization type detectors. I'm not aware of a single device that senses both types of fires and carbon monoxide so it seems a person would need at least two detectors to cover all three circumstances. I already had wired-in ionization smoke detectors, but added the CO/photoelectric combo to gain the additional coverage. Only an emergency will ultimately prove the value and performance of this device, but in the meantime I have a little peace of mind that I should be able to be warned of two types of fires and/or carbon monoxide.
Great product September 30, 2009 PJ (Rosenberg, Tx) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ordered this product. Received it in a few days--fast shipping. Product was in excellent shape and is up and running.
Lousy; their customer service is even worse. September 17, 2009 Zeb Weedrick (Furnessville, IN United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
After a few months, it would do a triple-beep alarm three times, then stop. The triple beeps means the smoke detector detected smoke. It has done this a few times now, very annoying. There was certainly no smoke in the house; in fact, all of the windows were open. And why would it stop after three times? Shouldn't the smoke detector keep beeping?
I did the self-test on the alarm and all seems fine.
I called their so-called Customer Service number, as mentioned in the manual. After going through all of their voice mail prompts ("press 2 for this, press 4 for that..."), at the end all I got was a message that "we are currently in a staff meeting. Please call back after 3pm". But I was calling after 3pm! Not even a way to leave a message. And I'm fairly sure that they were referring to 3 pm CST, since that was the time zone mentioned in the manual.
I am disappointed in First Alert. Their lack of commitment towards customer service raises a red flag.
Jumpy little fellow... June 29, 2009 Toastin A. Ways (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Seems to work ok, except that it's over the sink and when we drain pasta it sets off the alarm... otherwise it seems alright. It scares my son when it goes off, so that's another plus, as I believe that is the desired result.
Stopped working within 3 months June 18, 2009 Petey 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Bought and installed one of these in my upstairs hallway.
Within 3 months of installation, the alarm began intermittently emitting the "3 rapid chirps" alarm, which means that the entire unit is bad and must be replaced. Extremely unreliable!
