This has got to be the best fill valve ever July 13, 2009 Joe 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Okay, so I purchased this fill valve and received it 3 days later. Once I received it, I went downstairs and installed it. Installation only took about 15 minutes. After that, I turned on the water. I made all the adjustments, and I flushed. The only thing is it took quite a few flushes to get all the muck out of the tank. Besides that, it is great. I love this thing!
Failed after 6 months May 10, 2009 Karrywooder (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The valve got clogged up after 6 months, and water flows out to a trickle so it takes forever to fill the tank. No easy way to fix. My standard fill valve lasted 10 years!
tricky to install, noisier than I'd hoped April 27, 2009 Rhoadarmer 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
It took a bit of fiddling around with before it fit and worked just right.
Also, I was hoping that because it fills from the bottom that it would be quieter than the old top filling valve, but it's not.
The inside of the tank is now much cleaner than before, but do I care?
I'd go with something else next time.
Engineered to sell......not to save water. March 3, 2009 B. Belter (Chicago, IL) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This review is long, but if you're considering buying this valve, it's worth your read. I was amazed and happy about how much this fill valve was going to save me on wasted water down the toilet drain. The install was easy and the valve seems well designed and engineered. I measured the amount of water my toilet was wasting with the full open "mini-valve" and I collected almost a whole gallon of water that would have otherwise gone down the drain. I read from the water meter to compare how much water was used during each flush with the mini-valve wide open, and with it in the optimal position per the instructions. I went from a 4.5 gallon flush to a 3.5 gallon flush. Wow!! Or so I thought. Since the valve I replaced was broken, I didn't measure the amount of wasted water before the new hydroclean. But wait, I have 2 other toilets of the same exact make and model. Both with the older valve. I measured the amount of water per flush by reading the water meter. (the most accurate way) The meter reported that the flush from the other toilet used 3.5 gallons. That's right. The same 3.5 gallons that the toilet with the new calibrated hydroclean valve uses. I learned that the hydroclean valve will actually use more water when the mini-valve is in the default position of wide open. So when you get to physically turn the lever back on the mini-valve, your tricked into thinking that you are saving all this water, when in fact you are just preventing the valve from putting an extra gallon down your toilet drain. I also watched the fill cycle on my other toilet with the old valve and the bowl and tank finished filling at approximately the same time. I may have heard a few trickles of water fall down the back of the bowl, but it definitely wasn't a gallon like the hydroclean had led me to believe. I also observed a 40 year old toilet at my work, and it also filled the bowl in the same time that it filled the tank. At twice the price of the other replacement valves, I feel pissed off that I was duped. Also, they made the valve to give off a louder than usual sound when it does a ghost refill when the tank level drops enough due to a leak through the flapper. While this is great for alerting you that there is a leak, it is not so great when every time you flush the toilet, it sounds like your toilet is going to break. Anyone who hears it will not think your toilet is acting normal. It's very loud and annoying. I'm all about saving water, but when my old valve used the same amount of water, and it was quiet, it makes no sense to buy the hydroclean valve. Oh wait......if you want to spend twice as much money to get a valve that squirts extra water into the bottom of your tank to break up some of the rusty settlement, then go ahead. I'd rather clean the tank myself. There may be other toilets that can benefit from this that are really throwing extra water down the bowl, but it sure wasn't any of mine. And it wouldn't help the 40 year old toilet at my work either. Be sure to check your fill cycle if you decide to buy. If you really want to save water, then your best choice is to buy a new high efficiency toilet. Otherwise, my advice is to just buy the cheaper, simpler, and quieter fill valve on the shelf.
HydroClean 660 a Winner! June 29, 2008 Bill Bussey (NC) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My upstairs toilet had been making a soft leaking sound for months. More troubling was my well pump would run even when no one had been using the water for awhile. Thus, I must have a leak somewhere!
We have gone through a major drought over the past year or so, thus water waste had been a regionwide issue of concern.
My hardware store guru had suggested that my flapper must be leaking and suggested I clean around it with a green scrubber. I did this on several occasions, but the leaking sound only stopped for a short period of time before I heard it again.
I tried pushing down the float of my Korky Fill Valve. With some fiddling, this seemed to stop the leaking sound. However, after a flush or two, it would be barely audible again. Thus, the leaking sound didn't appear to be from a leaking flapper.
I picked up a few free Fluidmaster "leak detection tablets" from the hardware store and tried one out. The bowl became blue almost immediately. This verified I had a leak! But exactly where I didn't know.
I had to start shopping and figuring out what to do!
At the hardware store, I noticed the Master Plumber and Fluidmaster were the most carried brands. Lots of models of the Fluidmaster were available EVERYWHERE. But they seemed so plain and old fashioned. I didn't consider Korky because one had apparently not worked for me. There were a couple of Fillpro valves, which looked intriguing. However, in doing internet research, I found only negative reviews on them.
Over on the left of the rack, almost hidden from view, I saw the HydroClean 660 valve. Intrigued I noted that it a tube that came out of the bottom to self clean the bottom of the tank. When I had last replaced and cleaned the flapper, I had struggled to clean the tank. This feature alone looked kind of cool!
So I came home and did my research. I found the very positive review on Amazon, and a few other positive reviews elsewhere. The MJSI website had a lot of information on it, including video on how to install and the like. I didn't know that the toilet bowl was filled by the flow of water in the overflow tube! I was impressed that the HydroClean Fill Valve let you adjust this.
Google even pointed out to the website of Cobb County, GA which recommended the Hydroclean Fill Valve as a replacement valve to save water during their even worse drought!
All this sold me and I was ready to give it a try. I drove up to the nearest, and brand new Ace Hardware store and looked for the HydroClean Fill Valve. Ace listed it on their website. At first I couldn't find it on the rack with the other fill valves, so I wondered if they carried it in this store. I asked the manager, who directed me to the staff plumbing expert. He tried to figure out what I was talking about. But as we were walking back to the rack, there was the HydroClean on the end cap!
He noted that they had not sold very well which I found interesting because normally end caps are used for items they are trying to move. I mentioned that I had seen nothing but positive reviews on it, and about Cobb County recommending it. So I wished them the best.
I picked up the HyroClean 660 with the flapper. I thought I'd replace both at the same time, even though my existing flapper looked fine.
Installation was easy. The directions were good and easy to follow. The J tube installed easily. The adjustments were easy. I did the "pencil mark on the bowl" technique to determine the proper bowl fill level. It took about three flushes and a reread of these instructions, but it worked. Apparently a lot of water had been going down the back drain since Day 1.
When I got everything put back together, there was no leaking noise. I tried another "leak detection tablet." There was no blue in the bowl even after several hours. I think the leak was fixed!
It continues to work well several days later. I don't hear my well pump nearly as much as I used to, especially when there is no water running.
My only concern is that it sounds a little bit different - a little more "scratchy", when the tank is filling. This doesn't seem to be affecting anything.
I'll have to see if it continues to work well over the long term with my relatively hard water. I do soften all water coming into the house, but I do periodically have to clean my coffee maker with white vinegar to unstop it. So I know the water is relatively hard.
But right now I think that the HydroClean 660 is a winner! I'm planning to replace the fill valves in all my toilets with this valve.
