So easy, even I could do it! November 19, 2009 Groovymarlin 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not what you would call a "do-it-yourselfer" for the most part. But we really needed digital thermostats, and I thought programmable thermostats would save us some money. The thermostats the builder installed when we bought our house seven years ago were not even digital. I just wish I'd changed them out sooner - I can't believe I waited so long!
We have two systems in our house, one in the attic to heat/cool the upstairs, and one in the basement to take care of downstairs, so I ordered two of these Lux thermostats. I would say that I spent an hour researching thermostats and also watching videos online that demonstrated how to install them, so when I got the package from Amazon I was prepared! I spent approximately 10 minutes installing each one, and most of that time was taking the old thermostats off and trudging up and down one or two flights of stairs to turn the circuits on and off! They were very easy to install and worked great right out of the box. The displays are large and easy to read, and the light function is very nice. Menus and settings are fairly intuitive and easy to understand.
I did have to adjust the heating/cooling schedules that come built in. The defaults are pretty "frugal" and you'll be very hot in the summer and cold in the winter if you use them! But it was very easy to program schedules the way we needed them, and now that I've used it with both AC and heat I'm very happy. Our last "late summer" electric bill was noticeably lower, and I can't wait to see how much lower our gas bills are this winter. I can already tell that we're using less energy, just based on the temperature in the house at various times of the day.
I was pretty intimidated at the thought of installing new thermostats, but this Lux product made it simple. Five stars!
NOT RECOMMENDED! November 17, 2009 Denver Guy (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really hate this thing. I just bought it and had A LOT of trouble attaching the wires from the wall to the wiring block. It is VERY hard to get the wires secured because they made the screw areas too small.
An hour later, after FINALLY getting it in place, I fired it up. The whole screen became active - everything. That's not good.
I tried calling tech support, but of course you have to leave a message. Plus, they close at 4:30 PM Eastern time. They forgot about us out west.
I will never buy another Lux product.
Great Product November 13, 2009 Edwin (Chicago) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thermostat was easy to install and easy to use. Very intuitive. The instruction manual could use a lot of clarification for those who may not be comfortable with digital devices. The product itself though is excellent.
Shipping FAIL November 11, 2009 Arliss (OH) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Supersaver shipping is a joke. The package was picked up by fedex less than 2 hours away from my house and it takes 7 days to travel 2 hours?? They could walk it here faster.
Lux TX9000TS November 10, 2009 Zzzzz (Cali) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great DIY product. I've never changed a thermostat, nor even looked at the backing of one. The one I had was a Totaline P374-1000 programmable. The unit came with the condo I bought and it worked for almost 9 years. After removing it, I researched and decided on the Lux unit due to the wonderful reviews. I read the instruction manual and attached all the wires to the right locations and then it just booted up perfectly and turned on the A/C unit on the first try. The one thing I will say is that if you've never replaced a thermostat, just make sure you understand the wiring as there a quite a few. This needs 2 AA batteries in order to operate as well, so you'll be changing them out after awhile. The great thing is the touch screen and large numbers, but the problem I have with it, is that it's not all that intuitive in terms of programming. I had to tinker with it quite a bit to understand the logic of it. The latest thermostats may be similar in regards to functionality, but it was quite different from the Totaline. Good product and I've had it for a month.
