Thumb switch shuts off all the time! November 10, 2009 El Cucuy (Mexifornia) This grinder is pretty good for a cordless. Only two complaints.
1. When battery gets low or if you are pressing too hard the red light goes on and the grinder shuts off. It does this all the time.
2. Thumb on/off switch turns off way too easily. If you barely touch it shuts off.
Other than that no complaints. I bought it because I was installing a lot of commercial steel doors and always needed a grinder for thresholds, door shoes and sweeps, and all the other little items that needed to be trimmed. I've also used it recently (just light use) with a diamond blade for cutting tile, bricks, and concrete; Mostly for items that interfere with the installation of doors.
If I could make any improvement it would be to change the switch to make it not so touchy.
Great Grinder August 15, 2009 Randall Carlson (Near San Francisco) I've had a Makita XLT kit for about a year now, and there have been several occasions when I really wished that I could just snap an 18-volt battery on a portable grinder and do a small job. Finally, when my wife wasn't looking, I decided to pull the trigger--and am I glad I did. I used it immediately to cut through a metal sink drain (Think: water), a situation where a saw was clumsy and a 110v grinder would be folly. Fast and powerful cutting!
I would not recommend this tool for heavy-duty, repetitive work, but smaller for jobs it is convenient and more than adequate.
Excellent cordless grinder June 1, 2009 P. Tjarks I have had a Ryobi grinder for years and it was fine as long as you did not need it to work more than five minutes or grind anything more than the galvanize coating off of metal, but this Makita is a real workhorse, the battery lasts and it seems to be just as powerful as my small corded Makita grinder
handy February 5, 2009 J. R. Sheehy (Boston, MA) its handy to have- cuts bolts easily and fits hands well. it kills batteries a little quick, but its not really intended for heavy duty use. if you're into the makita system already, this is a good product. if not, then i'd consider the real expensive milwaukee
handy when you need it February 1, 2009 Eugene Tardie (Vermont, USA) This tool has a feature which does not allow you to apply to much pressure on the tool, it will shut down the tool if the red light on the side is on to long, while it is helpful in regards to not overloading the motor, it is pretty sensitive. Still I like the tool, I can have it on my work bench always ready for a small job of cutting something or sharpening when I don't feel like taking out my corded version. The tool is well make and has an easy to use spindle lock. Over all I could recommend this tool.
