Amazon.com Product Description
The Kidde PI9000 Battery-Operated Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm combines photoelectric and ionization sensing technologies into one unit to offer broad detection against smoldering and flaming fires. Experts recommend that for optimal protection you have both types of sensing technology in your home. This smoke alarm's trademarked Hush feature allows you to silence nuisance alarms, while an indicator LED and test feature let you easily confirm that the alarm is working.

The Kidde PI9000 Battery-Operated Smoke Alarm:

  • Features a hush button to silence the alarm for non-emergency situations like a smoky dinner.
  • Compact design blends in seamlessly with your home decor.

Dual-Sensor Technology for Improved Safety
Experts divide home fires into two groups: flaming and smoldering. Flaming fires result from flammable liquids and cooking accidents, while smoldering fires most often occur when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are left unattended. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, like those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. However, photoelectric sensors are may detect larger, more visible fire particles, such as those produced by smoldering fires, sooner than ionization sensors. Each must pass identical performance standards to obtain third-party approval and meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 217, the independent standard to which alarms are listed. Because you don't know what type of fire you will have in your home, experts recommend installing both types of technology for optimal protection.

Experts Recommend Protection from Both Types of Fires
Virtually every recognized fire authority recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric alarms in order to maximize protection from either flaming or smoldering fires. Kidde offers photoelectric smoke alarms, ionization smoke alarms, and dual sensor alarms, which combine both technologies in one unit. Regardless of the technology, the most important thing is to ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Studies show placing alarms in both bedrooms and hallways could increase a family's escape time by up to 15 minutes.

Fire Authorities recommending both smoke alarm technologies:

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)
  • U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • Consumer Reports
  • National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM)
  • Underwriters Laboratory (UL)
  • Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.

This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the Hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation.

Reliable 9-Volt Battery Power, Indicator LED, and Test Feature
Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.

A standard 9-volt battery powers this alarm, which provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know it's time to change the battery.

The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It features tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft.

This dual-sensor smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Two out of three failed in a year   October 10, 2009

Two out of three units I purchased over time, failed after about one year of use. I guess I will try different brand now..

5 out of 5 stars Works great! No problems.   September 20, 2009

I bought five of these in June 2008. All of the alarms are still going strong without problems. They were very quick and easy to install. We had a chance to actually hear one in action when something on the stove started to smoke. The alarm worked fine, and thank goodness for the "hush" feature! The price beats local stores after you figure in tax. I'm purchasing 3-4 more of them now.

5 out of 5 stars Good smoke alarm   September 12, 2009

So far this has been good with no false alarms. We had another brand that was beeping for no reason and noticed that this one seemed to be rated high so changed brands. We haven't had it very long but expect it to be good.

1 out of 5 stars Get a First Alert alarm instead--instructions are terrible   August 1, 2009

The fire alarm instructions don't tell you that you need a drill, screwdriver, hammer. Nor do they explain the little plastic screw anchors that come with the unit. Get a "First Alert" alarm instead--they are better made. An alarm with shoddy instructions was probably built sloppily.

5 out of 5 stars Repeat customer   July 11, 2009

I bought this dual smoke alarm about 4 years ago and it just started giving me some false alarms. Previously I was buying the cheep models and they would only last a year at most. I am very pleased with this product and am happy to find exactly what I want at Amazon vs having to track it down at a big box store. Super saving shipping, no tax, no gas driving around. I anticipate that my replacement that I am ordering today will have the same wall plate so I won't have to drill new holes! A few years ago we had a weather situation and I had a few (chain) smokers in the same room with the alarm while we were burning oil lamps since we had no power. Yes, it did go off! As it should have! That gives me confidence that it would alert me if I do have a fire. I have not had a fire in my home to truly test it, thankfully! This dual smoke alarm has served me well, I'm a repeat customer.
