Need 2 to get 1 August 30, 2009 C. Sherrod (Saratoga, WY United States) We ordered two of these, 1 for us, 1 for a friend. Neither worked as shipped. We made 1 working item (we think) from the 2 sent. It was not worth the cost of returning.
The jellybean of multimeters August 24, 2009 the_sheep (Milwaukee, WI) This is possibly the cheapest, most basic digital multimeter you can buy. It is also probably the least accurate, least precise multimeter instrument you can buy too. Its target is the hobbyist/DIY market, so don't think about doing anything professional with it. Thing is though, consider what your minimal outlay of cash gets you:
- A light, portable multimeter. Fits in your pocket, or your toolbox. Very handy. Uses 9V battery. Even has decent-ish test leads.
- Compared to an analog multimeter, this device is superior. 1 mega-ohm input impedance. Even tests transistors. In resistance mode, can be used for testing continuity (although it doesn't beep). Keep your brain engaged when using it, and it will last a good long time and give you the answers you need and not explode.
- 2% accuracy (mind you, this is only considered valid for a year) gives you fairly close results.
- For most basic digital/embedded work, this meter is more than adequate. Is the line high/1? Is the line low/0? Is the line in-between? For questions like that, this meter does the trick.
In short, it does work and can be used to solve a lot of hobbyist/DIY problems when circuit troubleshooting. For me, at least (budding embedded hobbyist), it answers 90% of all my questions that I typically need when working on circuits, usually continuity. While I've wanted to get another (far nicer) multimeter, I find this does what I need so I keep putting off getting a better one until it dies.
There's more to this than meets the eye. Don't rule it out just because it's cheap. You may find that it's all you actually need in a multimeter.
Doesn't last long August 13, 2009 Reviewer (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used this multimeter a few times in a 6 month period. It was not very precise but ok for hobby use.
However it was not measuring anything properly after 6 months.
Save yourself some time and money and invest in a more reliable multimeter even if you have to spend a bit more.
Good Value Multimeter - Recommended July 11, 2009 CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA) The DT-830B Multimeter is not a high-end Multimeter, nor is it priced like one. It is an inexpensive multimeter that is good value when you consider all of the features.
This multimeter performs all of the standard functions you would expect, Resistance, DC Current, DC Voltage, AC Voltage, and Diode checker. So far my meter has proved to be fairly accurate, but I wouldn't trust it for detail work involving tight tolerances.
Note: It does not have an audible tone on the Diode or Resistance testers and it easy to misread the manual to assume it does because the documentation covers more than one model. You have to locate the 830B in the chart to see which features are included and ignore the features in the instructions that not on this unit.
For the low price of this multimeter I will not be too worried about losing or damaging it and if it breaks I will likely buy another one.
Recommended as an inexpensive basic multimeter for the casual user or hobbyist.
You get what you pay for June 29, 2009 LionShooter 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I only needed an inexpensive pocket meter to keep on the jobsite to check for live wires during reconstruction. This one looked right so I bought it.[...]. It worked fine...but only once! After that first reading, it would never again read voltage. If a circuit was live, the numbers jumped all around so I knew there was voltage but it will not lock on to 120 or 220 or anything else for that matter.
IMHO...JUNK
