good deal October 14, 2009 rosegom (oregon) While it took me quite a while to get this machine up and running, i'm very satisfied with the end product. I also purchased the 6" extension and it was relatively straightforward to install. Much of what i read in previous reviews is true:
1) the blade they ship with the unit is good for one thing only...use them to set up and tune your saw...sometimes initial tuning adjustments can ding up the teeth...I did and i'm glad i wasn't destroying my more expensive blade in the process. Do not however use the blade that Grizzly sends with the machine to actually cut wood. They are really really worthless and i was very disappointed in the product when i first used it. But install a good blade and all is well with the world.
2) it took a long time to make the initial adjustments to get the blade on the wheels with the extension kit. After many failed attempts I called the help line and they were patient and corrected the problem.
3) The help line was not helpful in resolving another issue however. The guide post assembly would not stay in alignment as I adjusted it to different heights. It would skew out of alignment for no apparent reason resulting in an out-of-true blade. No one at the help line knew what to say and they told me that they would get back to me, but never did. here is the issue: the large screw that tightens the guide post has what appears to be a ball bearing welded on to the end of it. one would think that this is the ball bearing that is necessary to make the guide post align correctly. it is not... the ball bearing is loose inside and can be lost when you switch from the shorter 6" post to the longer extension. Once I put the loose ball bearing back where it belonged, the guide post worked flawlessly.
overall, i am very happy with the unit - quality construction at a very good price.
erashaf September 24, 2009 E. Shaffer This is a truly fine and rugged band saw. It replaces an old small three-wheel Craftsman saw that was always inadequate for many projects and also kept breaking blades because of the rather sharp diameter of the wheels. This Grizzly saw is a very well engineered and beautiful machine. I have been using it for a month now and I never want to stop my work on it once I get started. It is a true pleasure to finally work on good and adequate equipment.
Nice Little Saw ! September 4, 2009 Thomas Lake (Tacoma Wa.) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let me start off by saying, I ordered this saw on 9-1-09 I took delivery on 9-3-09
granted, I live in Washington state and it came from Bellingham Wash.
Fed Ex Freight did the delivery, very good service ! the driver even moved it into
my shop from his truck. even tho I told his office I could handle it. ive my own
appliance hand truck. Grizzlies web site says to the contrary.
assembly took approx. 4 hrs + 2 hrs building my own mobile base,(very similar to
the ones in the user submitted pics)plus I had to run to the BORG store for
some more lag bolts.
I decided on this band saw because of the 80+ reviews and only one bad one.
plus it has alot of standard options, the Rigid has no fence and only guide blocks.
Ive used alot of band saws over the last 35 yrs this one is in the top 5.
its affordable, its easy for one person to move around(on wheels)its got several other after market options also available.
The instructions were well written and understandable.
the fit of parts was perfect, I expected that tho.
Adjustment of the blade tracking was easy, adjusting the roller guides was a little
harder. but still, the "instruction book" was easy to understand. It just took some
tweaking on my part to get them dead on!
getting the main body UP onto the base by my self was easy - but - a helper for
that part might be needed for anyone that cant lift over 175lbs.
Im also glad I decided to change the speed to a slower blade speed, the nuts for
the belt tension werent very tight. caution about bolt and nut tightness...
DONT OVER TIGHTEN THEM. ! !
I was putting the fence on and decided to stop making them real tight for fear
Id strip the threads out.
One last thing,, I recommend NOT putting the table on till after you adjust the
guide rollers, if you do put it on first, you ll just have to take it back off again.(but its real easy to R/R )
AND get yourself some "GOOD" Blades.
Fantastic saw August 22, 2009 G. Book (Hartford, CT USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought my first Grizzly tool about 15 years ago. Their quality was acceptable then, but it has improved significantly since. This bandsaw was easy to put together, and after following the instructions for adjustments and first time use, it runs perfectly. No or minimal vibration. The only difficulty I've had is adjusting the blade tension because the knob is too difficult to turn. I'm not sure how to make it easier to turn, perhaps some silicon spray. Other than that the saw is fantastic. After reading other reviews I decided not to use the blade that came with the saw and instead bought a timberwolf blade. I haven't had any trouble sawing yet, but I've only been sawing pine. My Grizzly jointer and dust collector are still working perfectly after 15 years, so hopefully this bandsaw will work that long as well.
Everything I need July 30, 2009 Joseph Yonke II (Bowie, Maryland United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this saw now for three years or so. Use it in my garage workshop. I admit that the longer I've owned it, the more I've come to know it and this is a good thing. It has done everything I need it to do without any problems. Even after discovering that one of the guide bearings had frozen, I had no problem replacing it through Grizzly. Always have had pleasant experiences with that organization. Installed the riser couple of years back and got some good blades and would do it all again in a heartbeat. That four inch dust port is wonderful along with the tensioner for the blade. I bought this saw directly from Grizzly. Not sure Amazon was selling it back then.
