Amazon.com Product Description
Ultra-powerful yet super-quiet, the Porter-Cable 892 router offers smooth, reliable operation at a variable speed between 10,000 and 23,000 RPM. This handy tool lets you make changes--like rotating the height adjustment knob, locking and unlocking the motor from the mount, and locking the spindle--all from right above the table. Great for woodworking projects, the 892 features a 2-1/4 HP motor, an auto-spindle lock that allows for quick and easy one-hand bit changes, and a bypass control that's ideal for both larger adjustments and taking out the motor. Made for use with many of the 890 and 690 series router bases, the 892 comes with a CD-ROM that breaks down the process of constructing a router table into clear, concise steps; a versatile carrying case with extra bit and part storage; a generously sized, transparent sub-base; 1/4 and 1/2-inch self-releasing collets; and a handy wrench. For added peace of mind, this tool also has a 1-year limited warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Router promises but does not deliver   August 24, 2009

The Porter Cable 892 2-1/4 hp router fits easily up to my Bench Dog router table insert. Vertical adjustments are easy. The little pin that is supposed to lock the shaft to enable tightening and loosening the collet broke off in the first couple of months' use. I never got round to getting it fixed in warranty; just used two wrenches instead.

Though the router has both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets, it is not up to handling bits over about 2 inches diameter. I made raised-panel oak doors, which need a 3 inch bit. The router got very hot and began to smell of burnt insulation. It evidently has no high-temperature cutout, and eventually burnt out completely, in spite of giving it 5 to 10 minutes rest between doors. Now it is out of warranty, so I'm buying a different make and going up to 3-1/2 hp.

5 out of 5 stars great router   May 31, 2009

i love this router. by far has enough power for any job. the only thing i don't like is that it comes with one wrench for bit changing. It uses an awkward button to hold the arbor still which is great in idea but impractical once you have used the router and accumulated any dust on the unit. It has a slow start which is great. i work as a cabinet installer and recommend this router to all of my apprentices. i also recommend the bosch 1-1/2 horse power trim router for tighter quarters.

Very pleased with the router, excellent adjustment feature, and smooth start. Would highly recommend this router.

1 out of 5 stars Porter Cable Junk from China   April 3, 2009

Gone are the days when Porter Cable made quality power tools. This router is made in China and it is not up to the quality that Porter Cable used to make. I have four other older Porter Cable routers, and I will never get rid of them as long as they continue to operate. This model 892 router has so much run out on the spindle that it vibrates my router table. Don't waste your hard earned dollars on this piece of junk. You would be better off buying a used older model 690 or 691. I used this router for one day, and will end up selling it for a fraction of the cost on ebay.

5 out of 5 stars good router   December 21, 2008

It runs smooth when I want it too. That's all I need from this tool.
