Great if you're a hobbit March 16, 2010 Ben (Western USA) I don't mean to slight a legitimate tradition or the folklore upon which Blackthorns take on interest as curios, but for all practical intents and purposes I could not walk around with this thing without looking as if I were supposing people might think I'm from Middle Earth or something. Out of the proper context, this stick is simply an absurd accessory. The African Walking Stick is no different in this respect and Cold Steel's City Stick frankly suits the persona of a pimp. One would have to diligently consider an effort to avoid awkward appearances to use such a tool in a discrete way. Cold Steel's ash stick resembles a baseball bat too much. Surveying most of Cold Steel's product line leaves me thinking that discretion is not one of their priorities at all, which is unfortunate because it really limits the practicality of the tools. In some environments, a polyproplyene shaft "unbreakable" umbrella makes a lot of sense. It's discrete and not at all exclusive to the elderly and disabled. Unfortunately I happen to spend most of my time in what might as well be a desert. An umbrella here would be even more conspicuous than a baseball bat. I was looking for a stick to keep stray dogs away when I walk my puppy. I could have used a plain polypropylene stick of an appropriate length. Instead I'm going to cut a hickory shovel handle to the right length. At least I won't look as ridiculous as I would with this thing.
This is not a real blackthorn and therefore it should be evaluated for its practical use. As a practical walking stick, it is neither discrete nor is it suitable in appearance. Cold Steel does not offer a more practical or discrete alternative. The African stick is just as fantastic looking, the City Stick is too flashy, and the Escrima is too short for walking. It's too bad because most of the wood and aluminum walking sticks are not suitable as striking tools and may not be designed for thrusting.
Not Well Thought Out March 8, 2010 mohctep (South Carolina) Knob too big for medium sized hands.First time out,I dropped it,and the fake "wood" chipped big time.
After removing the fake wood, and sanding it back into a slightly smaller rounded shape,it fit and functioned MUCH better.
Better to leave off the fake car dashboard wood, and make the knob out of the same material the rest of the stick is made in[in a size that fits an average man's hand-and at a lower price].
Pretty good, but maybe overhyped by some reviews. March 4, 2010 Christopher Boatright From a distance this could pass for a traditional wooden walking stick, but the illusion does not last within ten feet. The shaft has a textured series of ridges that are not clearly visible in the photograph, which I assume help the grip or it may just be cheaper to make the mold this way.
The most important aspect of the appearance for me was the knob. This is not actual burlwood (I've seen some reviews that had indicated that it was actual wood), but it's about the best plastic imitation of burlwood I've ever seen.
As some reviews have pointed out it is REALLY a good idea to get a rubber tip to the cane. I'll be shopping for one this weekend. This thing will slip on nearly any smooth surface, even concrete.
The weight and balance is really nice, the shaft is a bit thick and the knob is rather large (I'm 6'1" and have fairly big hands) and would probably be unwieldy for anyone with average or small hands.
Cold Steel missed the boat January 18, 2010 David L. Roberts (Madill, OK) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having used Cold Steel products for years, I was greatly disappointed in their Blackthorn walking Stick. It is a heavy, over size, bulky, chunk of plastic. I have a large hand but am unable to obtain a secure grip on the over size head. Satisfaction is 100% negative on this product. Highly recommend all other Cold Steel products.
Nothing like a real irish walking stick October 9, 2009 Mask Maker (L.A.) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
The Cold Steel "Irish walking stick" is way too thick and bulky. It's weight is ridiculous. There are plenty of light weight but STRONG materials that this could have been made out of. It's too big and awkward to even use in self defense. I don't recommend it. For $25 extra dollars, you can order an authentic Irish blackthorn walking stick on line. Do a Google search.
