Product Description Pet owners and animal hobbyists are discovering rats as fascinating and intelligent creatures that can be bred selectively and kept as pets. This book advises on virtually all aspects of caging, feeding, rat management, and training. Although "rat homes" are commercially available, the authors' detailed discussion of caging includes many do-it-yourself ideas on ways to improve on the manufactured versions and convert rat enclosures into structures that better meet hobbyists' needs. There is also advice on rat trainability, and specific instructions for the training of these animals. Approximately 80 full-color photos.

Not much on Training October 20, 2008 This is a decent book to have if you have or are planning to own a pet rat, but the word "training" in the title is a misrepresentation of the book's content. It is more a description of what you can expect from owning a rat along with useful hints on caring for rats. The training content is very thin -- maybe only about 10% of the book and some of the "tricks" are actually just fun things you can do with rats. I was hoping for a book filled with a series of tricks along with detailed instruction on how to condition a rat to perform them. If that is what you are looking for, I would recommend looking elsewhere. If you want the basics, this book is ok. The writing does leave something to be desired -- here is an example: "So you think that hamster habitat is a steal of a deal and cute to boot? Think again! What's homey for Hammy is wrong for Ratty." This tone is continued throughout the text. I don't mean to completely dump on this book. There are some useful bits of information, but on the whole, I didn't learn a whole lot about training.
Great little book September 10, 2008 Ended up not getting any rats. I felt like this book was easy to read and understand.
Loved it! May 15, 2008 I really enjoy this book & find it a very useful reference. Highly worth the price. Easy to read tone, with a lot of humor, while still telling you everything you need to know about pet rats. It covers all the basics of pet rat care as well as tips on training.
A good training book! January 26, 2008 I found this book to be helpful for how to train your rats. It has different tricks and games, and is full of interesting advice. The author's voice is humourous while informative. While it is not a rat care book - I would get Debbie Ducommun's rat book for that - it also has information on looking after and caring for your rat though not as detailed. It's a must-have for those who are interested in training your rats and playing games with them.
straightforward & covers the high points! October 17, 2007 I love it... haven't finished it yet but expect to soon. The half+ that I've already covered includes all the fine points of how to prepare for your new pet(s) and how to select them - GOOD advice! Now I'm at the fun part and am looking forward to implement the easy and straightforward ideas on training. In addition - it's a light read, sprinkled w/ humor... makes it even more enjoyable.
