Don't buy from Amazon!! Go to Lowes. . . $39.99 May 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Thanks to a fellow reviewer, I checked [...] and sure enough, the smoker was half the price. :) Very nice.
At any rate, a couple notes of caution about the smoker itself. I didn't read the instructions at all; I don't even know where they are. So, these things might already be in there.
First, even though the handles have wood accents, the metal parts of the lid handle get VERY HOT. No touchy!! I am working on an alternative handle that will be cool to the touch.
Secondly, the bottom gets extremely hot also. In my excitement to use the smoker, it slipped my mind that I might not want to put it directly on my composite deck. I smoked some meat. Very yummy. However later, I discovered that the feet on the base melted into the deck slightly. Not like the China Syndrome or anything, but enough to cause concern. Also, it left a circular burn mark on the deck. I guess I am an idiot. I thought maybe some other idiots could learn from my idiocy.
Another suggestion, the smoker had over-spray on the inside from the external paint finish. I figured it might not be a good idea to cook food in there before burning it in to get rid of the potentially toxic smoke and vapors.
Other than that, it's a fantastic product.
Worthless, save your money November 22, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I agree with the above reviews. I am using it as we speak (Thanksgiving 07) & it sucks. It is hot for about an hour, then drops off. I will be fighting it all day. I'm sure that we will end up outting the bird in the oven.
great smoker November 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had 2 of these smokers in the last 28 years I smoke two 22 # turkeys at one time. I also smoke 4 roasting chickens at a time. They all come out moist and full of flavor. Rub the birds with a good seasoning and let it go. Watch the internal temp. Have fun
Great Pork Shoulder BBQ Smoker!!! April 28, 2007 If you want to cook perfect pork shoulder, this is the smoker to get! It has an excellent, long-lasting charcoal pan!!
First, find a real external thermometer on the internet - one of the $30 ones. Then take the lid to your local metal fabricator and have them weld the thermometer into the lid.
Now - throw away the two pans and the middle rack. What you have left is the base with charcoal pan. The 2' barrel middle with rack on top. And the lid.
Now go the grocery store and buy two 10lb pork shoulders, apply your favorite rub and let sit overnite in refrig. Start coals at 6:00 am next morning, put meat on top rack, keep temperature at 200 to 250 and cook for 10 hours. Dinner will be ready by 5:00 - enjoy!!
I have been using mine for 5 years now and am very happy with it.
Good hardware, good smoker, but....... January 12, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
What, if anything, gives four stars, not five? Putting the bleeping thing together. I have used this twice, the problem is with the learning curve of da chef. Takes a few times, the taste is worth the time to learn to get the meat cooked just right. I think the wood chip soaker is A MUST, plus a meat thermometer is A MUST. I am old fashioned and prefer the charcoal fired version, which this is.
