3 out of 5 stars User Review   November 18, 2009
Lonnie J. Perry (VA USA)
The first one did not work and was returned. The replacement works great (so far - 4 weeks).

5 out of 5 stars Works well   November 18, 2009

So far, I am pleased with this thermometer. We followed the directions for setting it up (as was suggested in another review), and it works perfectly. I've placed the remote thermometer in various locations, and it has connected and worked every time.

I compared the temperature reading with my other thermometer, and it is accurate. The display is large and easy to read. I also like the silver coloring. It has min and max temperature memory, which I like. The only thing I wish it had is a humidity reading. Good thermometer overall.

1 out of 5 stars Not Very Accurate   November 14, 2009
Icegrl (Stamford, CT United States)
I tried using this unit with several sets of new batteries, but found the performance to be consistently inaccurate.

Keeping the transmitter in the same room, the transmitted temperature never matched the temperature reported by the base station. It was usually about two degrees off, but either low or high, so the error wasn't consistent.

I also tested the unit with the transmitter outside. I put it in the window casing between a closed glass window and a screen. It reported temperatures unusually high. I don't think this was a case of heat build-up outside of the glass as my old Radio Shack sensor (may it rest in peace) never had any issues with this location.

Overall, I found this unit to be inaccurate and not reliable enough to be trusted. On the plus side, the display is easy to read.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money   November 14, 2009

Contrary to other reviewers, I do know how to READ, and read the manual carefully. I followed the instructions several times, even trying to reset to synchronize the units. I then went to the website, where the instructions were slightly different, and still I could not get the units to work. I am using the proper batteries...they are brand new and plain alkaline. I have also had similar wireless units from a different company and they worked fine.

I wasted two hours trying to get this to work. I can't even get the LCD screen to show anything. It's going back. What a waste of my time.

This was part of an order of three different items. Two of the items are going back..one was damaged. What has happened to the quality of the products that Amazon.com sells?

5 out of 5 stars Nice little package for the price!   November 6, 2009

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL NEW USERS!

I have read a few negative reviews on this product from people who obviously didn't bother to READ the instruction manual before setting up this system for the first time.

It clearly says in the manual that you need to put the batteries in the external sensor FIRST! Wait 30 SECONDS, THEN install the batteries in the base station! If you fail to follow this order and install the batteries into the base station before the external sensor is powered up and running, the external temp will not display on the base station. Hard to believe that someone would return a product without bothering to check to make sure they were doing things right, but this kind of stupidity happens all the time. ;o)

My Review:

I bought this to monitor the internal temperature of the rain gauge housing of my Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station. During the winter I install a custom made rain bucket heater that is designed to melt the snow or freezing rain that accumulates in the collection bucket. I wanted to be able to monitor the internal temperature of the rain bucket so that I could see how hot the heater was keeping the tipping bucket area, and also to see how warm this housing gets during the summer when things can get VERY HOT in there.

The base station of this system is nice and narrow, and takes up very little table top space. This allowed me to stand this base right next to my Davis VP2 console which is why I didn't just use one of my Oregon Scientific mini weather stations.

The external sensor is a bit on the LONG side, so I was worried that it may not fit inside the rain bucket of the VP2, but I was pleased to discover that it fit in there just fine with room to spare! :o)

So... For the very reasonable price of this package, I really don't think you could go wrong. You can also buy additional sensors so that you could monitor temp data from several places in your yard or in your house.

Great job LaCrosse! :o)
