Asus 1005HA-PU1X vs. Samsung NC-10 November 20, 2009 Ubiq (South Pasadena, CA United States) I bought an NC-10 a few months back. I then made the mistake of allowing one of my kids to use it. After a week of wheedling, I surrendered the netbook to him, and so, was in the market for a new machine. After endless dithering I settled on a PU1X and placed the order. My observations are consequently based on the hands-on experience of a single example of each model.
I selected the PU1X over another NC-10 based on hardware variations: the Asus had the slightly faster processor (1.66 v. 1.60 Ghz.), wireless N, and marginally longer battery life. The prices of the two were virtually identical.
Out of the box, the Samsung has the better "finish". The keyboard is "chunkier", with a more certain touch. The overall feel of the NC-10 is closer to that of a high-end notebook than the Asus. The 1005HA is significantly noisier than the Samsung, and runs hotter.
The final deal-breaker was the bloatware on the Asus. It took significantly longer to boot and is overloaded with intrusive software that causes everything to run slower, even after pruning it back. Updating XP from the initial configuration to current took at least twice as long on the Asus, as does opening Firefox, or any other program.
The Asus goes back today; I'll be getting another NC-10.
Beware of Warranty November 19, 2009 UAC 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The ac adapter failed and Wendy the supervisor at ASUS gave me the run-around and will not honor the 1 year warranty. The warranty card plainly states that the warranty covers everything but, the battery or free accessories such as mice or laptop bag. She says that excludes them from covering the AC adapter that is integral to using the laptop. I contend that the AC Adapter is not a free accessory. Wendy is at the Customer Support Line they keep putting in these review responses and their job is to tell you that your warranty does not mean what it reads. I believe they have made a business decision to not stand behind these because they have a high failure rate on the AC adapter. I believe it will cost them more in unhappy customers than they gain by cheating us out of our warranty. I have bought many ASUS products in the past and thought they were a reputable company. I can not recommend them in the future.
Fine netbook, terrible power supply, terrible customer service November 19, 2009 C. Parris 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This netbook is fine, however the power supply failed in less than 4 weeks. I read reviews from others, and hoped that Asus would have fixed the power supply problem by now. I was wrong. Asus customer sevice was terrible... they refused to replace the defective power supply. Unfortunately from this experience I have to recommend that you avoid Asus products (they could have had a happy customer if they'd just replace a defective power supply).
The Ford Escort of Laptops-economical "just good enough" performance November 18, 2009 R. Lamm (Detroit, MI) I bought this model at Microcenter ($389) although it's $30 more its a brick and mortar store where i can take it if it has any problems, so far i havent had any and its been about 2 months. I upgraded the ram to 2gb. I call it the Ford Escort of laptops because its underrated for its slowness compared to a dual core laptop but its fast enough to surf the web, do papers cor school, play movies and watch youtube videos, it "will just" play HALO at lowest detail settings, playable but just barely.
I use the sleep setting frequently through the day to save battery life whenever i am away from i for more than 2 minutes. it flawlessly sleeps and wakes within a few seconds. I estimate actual usage watching videos to about 8.5 hours before low battery indicator says it needs recharging at 5%. Surfing with wireless on drops that to about 7.5 hours depending on file transfers.
this translates to me only having to charge it every other day and still be able to watch 3-4 hours of video a day.
I recommend getting good earphones because although the volume is ok, when in a coffee shop the background noise can almost cancel cheap headphones.
Suggestions I would make for it would be an s-video out port where the network cable adapter is and make the adapter on a dongle with a tiny space saver plug because its a portable book that doesnt get hooked up to a network cable ever.
also the battery isnt real big so i bet they could add a few ounces and make the battery 50% bigger with a run time of 12+ hours.
Havent used toe webcam or microphones yet but i look forward to trying it.
Wow, love it! November 18, 2009 J. Everett (Texas) Great computer, work in courthouses entering info. Portability and battery life are awesome. Screen resolution is also very good, boots up fast and keyboard is plenty big!
