Surprised at how well it works! February 27, 2010 tonixtonix (California) I know that's a surprising thing to say in today's "defective by design" marketplace! I use it to play MKV and AVI files off a standalone hard drive onto a non-hd tv. Really, you just plug everything in, change your TV to the appropriate Input setting and start watching your movies! The menu capability was the only thing keeping me from giving this product 5-Stars, but from reading other reviews, there seems to be firmware upgrades for the device I can apply to improve that. There also seems to be a newer model out, but if you can live with the device being standalone, I would recommend this product.
Perfect for my needs. February 26, 2010 Domel (NJ United States) This little media player was just what I needed for my collection of music, photos and digital videos that I store on a 1Tb USB drive. It plays most popular formats (I say most because once in a blue moon you will stumble upon a format that it can't play). WD claims they will constantly push out firmware updates to make this player compatible with new formats and improve functionality but you have to be a bit skeptical on this. This device has been out for 2 years and there have been only 2 firmware updates and it was mostly bug fixes. Meanwhile WD released new versions of this device forcing you to go and buy a new device if you want new functionality.
It definitely does not have all the features of the expensive full blown media centers, but if you just need to be able to play music on your home theater and show photos and videos on your TV you really can't get a better value out there.
Over all a great product for my needs. I highly recommend it.

some AVI,WMV some wont let me play them,WMV I tryed so many times & still wont play. it states on the box that it plays wmv9 but is that not the same as plain WMV. when I tryed to play H264 it skiped, X264 noise skips.ok its not transforming the picture bigger. its driving me crazy.because you can see the degrading picture for some reason it dose not smooth the picture out. & it should not be doing this, over the long run you will run into some issues. I have every couple of minutes, bad picture quality. 700mb avi movie was terrible picture . can see big pixel square boxes. Im using a 32 inch flat screen tv . 700 mb might be to small for flat screen tv. or the box is crappy. because the AVI is a smaller file & the tv stretched it out. might be ok with the old box tv maybe. terrible picture quality. tryed 1500 gb avi and the picture seemed better more of the time. emailed me your comment if you have any ideas to why my picture is terrible & what should I do about it to have better picture quality ( elliot 2698 at yahoo . com )& when is a new update going to come out so even more containers will play with no issues. AVI can some in many contains.the best Picture quality it really liked was mpeg2 but when I convert dvd the best is 7gb and the lower scale is 2gb witch is good but you cant get the very finest GB really small. H264 takes 5 hours to convert witch its a waste of time..
Good price February 8, 2010 LukeHoang (Camas, WA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a good product compare to the price that I paid for. Few problems like the remote is extremely slow which is really annoying. Take a long time to read the content of the USB drive, specially if you've a high capacity one. Some of the files need to go through their converter software even they worked fine with PC.
Always chocked up when playing AVI files January 31, 2010 M. Yang (Baltimore, MD United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The demo files came with the CD have mpg4 fils for videos. My camera, PowerShot A630, generates AVI files for video, which is supported file format according to product description. However, the screen often goes blank or black when trying to play these AVI files. I had to unplug the power, and plug in again in order to reset the unit. Then, it will play the AVI video clips fine for a while. It seemed that if it is in continue play mode from a reboot (power-off then power on), the clips can be played one after another fine. As soon as I want to manually select one video to play, nothing gets displayed even the bottom of the screen says the clip is being played.
The JPG files were stunningly beautiful on my 1080p TV with the devise. All demo files played fine too. However, there are no AVI file in demo files. I am planning to return the unit as the whole purpose of buying this was to be able to play the videos captured by my camera straight onto my TV without converting or reformatting to another format.
