Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
While not exactly classical crossover's take on The Monkees, this international quartet of young male vocalists from America, France, Spain, and Switzerland shares a similar genesis. Assembled after a long talent search and audition process, they were teamed with pop producers Per Magnusson and David Krueger (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys) and Steve Mac (Charlotte Church, Kelly Clarkson) and turned loose on a slate of classical-pop favorites, with a dramatic, dynamically nuanced read of Toni Braxton's signature "Unbreak My Heart" setting the standard. While the deceptive ease of their harmonies belie the group's disparate nationalities and talent search roots on the melodramatic "Hoy Que Ya No Estas Aqui," Morricone's glorious Mission theme, "Nella Fantasia" and the cascading "Passera," the album's pop-oriented material is a decidedly more mixed bag ."Everytime I Look at You" and "Feelings" (not Morris Albert's) soar gracefully, while "The Man You Love" seems more a throwback to the producers' boy band roots. The standard "My Way" and a lovely, bonus cut Italian version of "Unchained Melody" close the album out on a high note, even if their safe familiarity doesn't offer the promising quartet a sufficient musical challenge. --Jerry McCulley

From the Label
Il Divo are four exceptional young men with formally trained voices who take popular songs, old and new, to another level where the historic rift between pop and classical music is finally healed. The band were formed after a worldwide search which took more than two years. Consisting of an American, Frenchman, Spaniard and a Swiss, Il Divo spent the first half of 2004 in London rehearsing and recording. Some of their songs will be familiar like "Nella Fantasia" (based on Gabriel's Oboe from Ennio Morricone's penned score of The Mission) and a unique and powerful version of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart". The four principles share the lead throughout, combining to deliver choruses whose awesome power is matched by their tonal delicacy. Passion and restraint they show to be an irresistible aphrodisiac. Reflecting the multi-national character of the group, the songs are not all sung in English but drift between Spanish, English and Italian. However they are worded, all use the emotional Esperanto of love.

Album Description
"Il Divo have taught me more than I have taught them. I am actually intimidated and slightly in awe of their talent! I am more proud of this album than anything else i've ever been involved with, they are going to be huge." --Simon Cowell

5 out of 5 stars Pure Art!   December 4, 2008
People with no formal musical education: Please stop posting false and misleading reviews...

The truth is that they are 4 experimented singers, most of them have a strong (and true artistic) vocal music background, so stop thinking they are another new pop music "boy band", in fact they are more like an "operatic men quartet", and some of them even have at least 20 years of a successful pre-Il Divo opera carrier, this is why some people do not understand that they are not just newcomers doing "covers", instead they actually do translations of some pop songs to another music language and genre that certainly neither is pop nor is opera, but a very nice mix of them. I'm sure they love to sing for the people who know how to appreciate their art!...other people can look elsewhere, (they don't mind)... ...in billboard pop charts for example where you will find Josh Groban for instance... who I also admire for his exceptional talent I must say...

People! Planet earth is not only a place called the USA... open your mind and EARS to the world. It's a shame that some people cannot enjoy this beautifull masterpiece!

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly unenjoyable production   November 14, 2008
I ordered this CD with high expectations. On its arrival, I eagerly played it, waiting for the glorious music I'd heard described. I was puzzled as I listened, trying to place the reason for my growing dislike. I loved the voices of the singers, I liked the genre of the songs...but was still left unsatisfied. Ultimately I realized that my displeasure was with the mismatching, almost discordant nature of the men's beautiful voices contrasted against the soundtrack that accompanied them. The accompaniment sounds like a cheap synthesizer with a little extra added in. The music should highlight and accentuate their voices, not sound like an afterthought that just distracts (a lot!)from the overall experience of the music. Though my 9yo daughter has none of my reservations and enjoys listening to it, she will do this only when I don't have to overhear it. Disappointed...waffling between 2 stars and 3 stars, but they DO have great voices; I just can't get past the distraction of the accompaniment.

5 out of 5 stars Real Italian Flavor   November 12, 2008
I was introduced to Il Divo when our Italian tour guide played this recording as we traveled by bus to Rome. "The music soars" is a phrase that aptly describes the album. There's a great mix of songs, some sung in English, some in Italian, all sung with passion. Anyone who is a fan of Enrico Morricone and the music he wrote for THE MISSION, will be especially thrilled to hear Il Divo's rendition of NELLA FANTASIA, which is set to the tune of GABRIEL'S OBOE. This is not background music; you're going to want to listen to each and every song presented by this exceptional group of tenors.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not incredible   June 17, 2008
Do you like to listen to music on your Walkman as you take your daily stroll? Do you like background music during a nice dinner, or while you are reading? Do you enjoy lush harmonies? Then this recording is for you.
Do you want music you can analyze and categorize? Then pass this one up.
For me, the pluses of the disc: For the most part, the orchestrations support and complement the singers. The four part harmonies are delightful.
The minuses: It all sounds alike. Nothing on the recording reaches out and grabs your attention. "Unchained Melody" and "My Way" begin as if they are going to be different; then they quickly gravitate into the sameness.
Don't throw the recording away. Just listen to it under the right conditions, and enjoy it for what it is.

My new favorite singers! They're so great, I get chill bumps listening to them. I hope to collect all their recorded music.
