Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The 2008 album from Dwele, is Sketches of a Man. This album brings Dwele back to a more gritty, experimental, and non-overproduced sound - one that originally caught listener's ears with his first EP demo Rize released in 1998.

4 out of 5 stars One of 2008's best! This sketch is a masterpiece.   August 26, 2008

Why aren't more people familiar with this remarkably talented gentleman? It is my wish that more music lovers familiarize themselves with male talent like Dwele, Rahsaan Patteron, Urban Mystiq and Calvin Richardson. People just don't know what they are missing. Ladies, you just don't know what you're missing. I was drawn to Dwele when I first heard a song he did called "Let Your Hair Down." His smooth tenor and creative lyrics took me in early on and after that, I was certain I wanted more.

Firstly, the album title and cover are creative and innovative. He was clearly a man prior to this compilation (listen to his previous works, "Subject" and "Some Kinda.") He pours his heart and soul into these tracks, but never overdoes it. He never uses his voice in a showy way, but he gets his point across effectively anyway. Most of the songs are mid-tempo, but you have a handful of faster tracks and quite a few ballads. Oh, and yes, there are some interludes. Sometimes interludes take away from the quality of the album, but here they make it even better. "Blow Your Mind" is a mid-tempo song and Dwele's lyrics and harmony are nice. My absolute favorite song here is "If You Want To." This song is pure genius! Everything from the production to the lyrics to the melody are nothing short of wonderful. "Love Ultra" is another great song, I really like the lyrics.

I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves the sound of music. Many complain that music isn't as good as it was in the 70s and 80s. To those individuals, listen to Dwele; I'm certain he will alter your opinion. 4 shining stars for SUCH a great job!

Mikeisha's Top 5

1."If You Want To"
2."Vain"
3."Love Ultra"
4."Open Your Eyes"
5."70s"

Excellent mood music. I love anything that Dwele produces. Big fan from day 1. A unique artist. He is truly blessed.

5 out of 5 stars DWELE does it AGAIN!!!   August 9, 2008
Dwele is a great artist but sometimes is the UNDERDOG!!! I've followed him since he was on the Slum Village joint.......I constantly pump all 3 albums........He's a great artist....My boys, Gritz & Jelly Butter opened for him in Charlotte in July......

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, Suave & Funky   August 9, 2008
Dwele is quite the musician, lyrist, crooner. He is an R&B artist who writes lyrics much like a rapper, the nuances, references to popular culture and uses of popular beats, chords and strings is ingenious. Not to mention he consistantly presents well developed themes with his offerings; Sketches of A Man is no exception. He is one of the few artist who can write a slow song that turns into a funky rhythmic groove and maybe back again like in Open Your Eyes. He is quite creative. This product will not disappoint true lovers of R&B from one of Detriot's finest. Please don't let any negative comments prevent you from adding this classic to your collection. For the reviewer who suggested that he use less derogatory language you might try buying the edited versions .

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best!   August 7, 2008
Although I consider Dwele to be one of my favorite neo-soul artists, I was a tad bit dissapointed by this release. It has way 2 many short skits on it and some of the rifts just doesn't make sense to me.

I liked subject , but I feel that Some Kinda was his best release yet and he is going to have to work very hard to surpass it's essence. And he also needs to get rid of all of the foul language, it feels out of place with his jazzy style and it turns away a wide range of what could be his audience. And lastly the composer of the beats to his vocals gets an A+.
