Album Description Alejandro Escovedo's 9th solo album, produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T.Rex, Thin Lizzy), Real Animal is a collective journey through Escovedo's various musical incarnations from punk rock to string quintets and it is as introspective as it is retrospective. This album features a band of frequent collaborators, including David Pulkingham (guitar), Josh Gravelin (bass), Hector Munoz (drums), Susan Voelz (violin), Brian Standefer (cello) and Chuck Prophet (guitar). The 13 original tracks unravel Escovedo's musical autobiography while presenting him as a masterful American musician, whose palette encompasses eloquent string quintets and shattering blasts of punk rock.

Great talent August 14, 2008 I first became aware of Alejandro when I saw him perform on a TV show and said to myself, "I've just got to have this guy's album." Since I love the blues, I thought the safest bet would be to get his Bourbonitis Blues CD, and I'm not disappointed. It's got to be one of the best I have ever listened to. Alejandro's got such a curious and successful mix of styles and genres ... I ordered Real Animal at the same time I ordered Bourbonitis Blues - and, again, was not disappointed. I have subsequently ordered three more of his CDs after listening to the preview tracks provided by Amazon. This service is an excellent way to determine whether you will like the album you are thinking of buying ...

I heard of Alejandro Escovedo for the first time a few weeks ago when I read about him in "No Depression" magazine. He had a new CD out, so I bought it. The first time I listened to it I kept wondering why I hadn't heard of this guy before. Great voice, great songwriter, great musician. Many good songs here, notably "Sister Lost Soul" and "Golden Bear." I understand this album is sort of a retrospective of his varied career, so I'm looking forward to going back and checking out his previous work.
honest music August 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I knew little to nothing about this artist prior to buying this cd ...After one listening to it ,I find it to be honest and straight up rock 'n 'roll ( forget stupid titles of classic or punk or any of that other crap) ...I kept thinking this is how I use to feel when I heard early Stones record (sticky fingers ,let it bleed , yes I am that old) In fact that is all that is missing from this fantastic little time machine of music ,is a few crackles from well worn vinyl friend...it's fun , full of good riffs and singing thats not great ,but will remind you of hot hot bands you saw at a bar somewhere and thought damn these guys are good...he's not pretty nor sexy or any of that other stuff ..He has an honest good feel for good music ..to give those of you a referance point think los lobos meets the stones, with a little stevie ray on top...buy this cd ...my friend johnny who likes most new or contemperary artist's like jay-z or tokyo police club was in the car with me and asked who it was ..because he never heard anything like it...yeah I told him it 's called rock 'n'roll baby..hmmm was his response in need to check this guy out & so do you....

This CD is Fantastic !! Though I've heard of Alejandro Escovedo and knew some of his work,it wasn't until I was lucky enough to hear him in concert this Spring, that I realized what a fantastic artist he is.A wonderful storyteller, amazing guitarist. This CD showcases some of his many talents-hard rocking or softly tearing at your heart-as a survivor.Buy this CD NOW and start enjoying .It's a great sing along outloud in the car summer music find. But you'll want to keep it around for the long winter ahead too.
Good, but rubs me the wrong way July 29, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love Escovedo, but i love him because on his best work he kinda forces his ego to submit to the music he makes. On this release he does the exact opposite: it's all about, "Hey, did i mention i was at the Chelsea Hotel with Sid & Nancy? Hey, look at me, i was there when it mattered, baby, i'm an icon now!" This not only makes me cringe, it makes me sad. Listen to 'A Man Under the Influence' and listen to the songcraft of a song like Rhapsody, or the wounded pride of Don't Need You, or even the tender remembrance of Rosalie. Those are songs where the artist is simply the vehicle, it's the SONG that's the star. Now on Real Animal we get this glammed-up version of a mythologized NYC rocker, prowling the streets & giving us a blow-by-blow of how cool he is. Is that really the Escovedo we want to hear? The self-aggrandizing lout? I was a little concerned that his previous release ('The Boxing Mirror') was a bit on the indulgent side, but if this blustery, shallow 'rock' is the alternative i think i'd rather hear Boxing Mirror. Don't get me wrong, i hope this one moves a million units and he ends up on Dubya's iPod again (some of us haven't forgotten!), but apart from Sister Lost Soul (which really is 1 helluva song) the rest is the sort of uncomfortably self-absorbed fluff that might suit a character like Morrissey but is as unappealing on Escovedo as clown shoes and a bowtie.
