Amazon.com A more accessible and less heavy-handed movie than Ang Lee's 2003 HulkLouis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk is a purely popcorn love affair with Marvel's raging, green superhero, as well as the old television series starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast within him. Edward Norton takes up where Eric Bana left off in Lee's version, playing Bruce (that's the character's original name) Banner, a haunted scientist always on the move. Trying to eliminate the effects of a military experiment that turns him into the Hulk whenever his emotions get the better of him, Banner is hiding out in Brazil at the film's beginning. Working in a bottling plant and communicating via email with an unidentified professor who thinks he can help, Banner goes postal when General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and a small army turn up to grab him. Intent on developing whatever causes Banner's metamorphoses into a weapon, Ross brings along a quietly deranged soldier named Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who wants Ross to turn him into a supersoldier who can take on the Hulk. The adventure spreads to the U.S., where Banner hooks up with his old lover (and Ross' daughter), Betty (Liv Tyler), and where the Hulk takes on several armed assaults, including one in a pretty unusual location: a college campus. The film's action is impressive, though the computer-generated creature is disappointingly cartoonish, and a second monster turning up late in the movie looks even cheesier. Norton is largely wasted in the film--he's essentially a bridge between sequences where he disappears and the Hulk rampages around. As good an actor as he is, Norton doesn't have the charisma here to carry those scenes in which one waits impatiently for the real show to begin. --Tom Keogh

better than 2003 version November 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Watch the 2003 version of The Hulk, and then watch the 2008 release. Obviously the new release is a HUGE improvement over the previous. Better script, better special effects, better cast led by Ed Norton, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler. Overall, this film is the better of the two... but that still is not saying much.
I have to go on a limb and say this movie was hyped to the point of near self destruction. It is possible the hype was created because this was known to be the year for comic book action adventure movies to explode into the box office. Sure enough, it was... Iron Man came through and made a huge impact on the big screen. Dark Knight shattered so many box office records they practically had to shove it into it's own category. Even Harry Potty 6 (a highly anticipated movie) needed to be puched back to winter of 2009 because of the competition created by the Marvel and DC Comic universe. Clearly, comic books have made a huge impact on screen writers, and frankly I see no end in sight.
When first saw The Hulk, I was so excited to finally see a version worthy of my time that I even rented the 2003 version just to have a chance to give it a symbolic farewell gesture. That excitement, excluding the performance of Ed Norton and Tim Roth, was met instead with a feeling of betrayal; a stone cold slap in the face which left the bitter scar of six years of waiting bruised into my face by an oversized green palm.
Better screenplay? Sure, but this doesn't change the fact that the film was completely predictable, and had absolutely no inspiration at all. From beginning to end, it was the same thing: nerd gets mad, nerd turns into Hulk.
Better special effects? Absolutely... but this comes with six years of evolving film technology. This entire movie was based abround how many times special effects could be used. The movie might as well have been a Jon Woo or Jerry Bruckheimer produced "action packed thriller" directed by Michael Bay. Better special effects do not make for a better movie. If any reader does not believe me, watch The Fountain, Pi, and Requiem for a Dream... all by the same director, Darren Aronofsky, who uses almost no CGI in any of his films.
Better actors? Here is my one critique that will not be negative. Edward Norton is now and has been my favorite actor since I first saw him in Primal Fear (starring along side Richard Gere). Tim Roth, another fantastic actor since stepping out of the shadows of earlier with with Quenton Tarantino in films such as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, gave a great performance which almost overshadowed Norton. These two combined make the movie worth watching. However, their efforts alone do not make the movie worth the hype it received.
Only two stars? Why not?... I am dissapointed in this movie. I do not feel like I should give it a higher review simply because of the fact that it isn't worth more than what it delivered to me. It delivered a two star level of satisfaction, and I use the word satisfaction loosely.
An improvement..... November 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
.....over 2003's "Hulk", but it still just didn't quite do it for me.
First off, it seems that superhero films are all the rage these days and, for the most part, Hollywood has been cranking out some decent ones (The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Superman Returns, et al). Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors and I really liked the fact that he took this film and made it a hybrid between the original comics version the the 1970's TV show version, starring Bill Bixby (look for Bixby shown on a television screen in the background in one scene). However, the film, though excellently acted and filmed, just doesn't seem to go anywhere.
Perhaps it was the fact that the Hulk was CGI. I could tell that it was fake and that made me unable to establish an emotional connection. I did, in fact make that conneciton with Banner (played by Norton), but when the Hulk was on screen, I just kind of lost that connection.
The plot itself is pretty straightforward and rather simplistic, but I just couldn't understand where the plot was going or what the whole point of it all was. Perhaps the film was left open for future sequels.
No matter. The Incredible Hulk is not a bad film, it just isn't a GOOD film. In fact, after it's over, it's rather forgettable, which is really sad. With someone like Norton carrying the film, it really could have been something great. Instead, you get something that's passable.
Hulk DVD November 19, 2008 The movie is awesome and sticks closely to the original story line. It is a must have for the Marvel Comic movie collection. Amazon shipped it quickly and reduced the price honoring their low price guarantee.
It would have been better to have left well enough alone! November 18, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I saw this movie in theatres with my girlfriend 3 months ago and damn were we both disappointed! Forgive me but I see that I am not in the majority of the Hulk fans who actually loved the first movie directed by Ang Lee. And I'm not ashamed to admit it either! But this movie on the other hand was just GOD-AWFUL!!! I admit what with them picking Edward Norton to play Bruce Banner I had my doubts anyway! I mean come on the script and the acting were as big a travesty as was for Blade Trinity, the casting was completely better in concept, the action just couldn't measure up to the other movie, and there was just too many needless cameos. Don't get me wrong Edward Norton is a great actor and all but he's just not an action star. And as for his performance well he just phoned it in. Liv Tyler who's really friggin' hot and drop-dead gorgeous and who usually puts in a decent performance was just dreadful here. To say nothing of the fact that acting and performance wise she's just not the best replacement for Jennifer Connelly as Betty. And other than that she kept on talking with this unbearably corny orgasmic voice! Which the way she did it was more annoying than sexy. William Hurt just didn't make it as Betty's soldier father. And why did he act like he was severly constipated all through the movie. Somebody please get this guy some Metamucil! Sam Elliot I would say did a so-so job at that role. And Tim Roth who I'm a big fan of(and have been since Rob Roy) was trying too hard to put in a performance unlike like his usual best which just blew up in his face! Tim just shouldn't be trying so hard and just be consistent with his usual best. It's was also a huge mistake the way the Incredible Hulk was portrayed. Why did they have to make him out to be really stupid and lacking in common sense?! The Incredible Hulk I know would not have run the opposite direction when he's being shot at. Yay! he threw the soldier vehicles towards them! Wake me up when he's done! The Hulk I know would have thrown them, knocked their blocks off,or he would have pounded the ground to send a big shockwave their way more than he did. Also when the Hulk and Betty are sitting on a cliff and they lightning on the horizon, why would he do something stupid like throw a rock at the lightning?! Alot of good that'll do!! LOL!! The brief cameo by Stan Lee was just pointless. I mean why would they show him drinking a beverage that Bruce Banner accidently bled in only to never show you what happened to him afterwards. Tim Blake Nelson was however enjoyable enough as the comic relief when he portayed the scientist who had access to Bruce's Hulk DNA. The only problem was after Tim Roth roughs him up to steal Bruce's superpowered DNA you don't get much of a sense what the radiation that was given off did to Tim Blake Nelson's character! Needless to say the only truly cool cameo was that of Lou Ferrigno's security guy. Lou will always be The Incredible Hulk to me! Now by the time Tim Roth finally becomes another kind of Hulk their fight just wasn't terribly exciting nor was it suspenseful. And come on rather than have an evil plan conceived as to what he would do once he changed other than destroy everything and try to kill The Hulk. Please!! So anyway if you're one of the few whom enjoyed Ang Lee's Incredible Hulk like I did or am just a big Hulk fan in general well then you're better off skipping this really bad raw sewage leak like the plague!
2008 Hulk on Blu-ray. November 17, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Being a Marvel Comics fan back-in-the-day, this movie (much moreso than the previous theatrical version) is much more faithful to the original comic book character and exploits.
Most have already seen this movie, or have heard enough about it to have formed an opinion. This review focuses mainly on the Blu-ray release.
Since I've been into Home Video before it was even called as such (when Laserdisc and CED were the disc-based movie formats), I'm a little more critical than most. I'd already had HD DVD for quite a while as well, before being forced (by Toshiba) to take the Blu-ray plunge.
That said, the picture quality of this disc is okay; not the best Blu-ray can offer (that I've seen...on HD DVD even), but still okay. The image is a little darker than normal. This might not be as apparent on a small (say 50" or smaller) HD display; especially if the display isn't properly calibrated...in other words, like right-out-of-the-box...with the Contrast and Brightness still jacked up by the manufacturer; but at 8 ft, it's noticeable in comparison to other titles (Matrix Trilogy-BR, SpeedRacer-BR, King Kong-HD DVD, Transformers-HD DVD, etc.,). There's plenty of detail; but that comes along with all HD...if properly mastered.
The reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because even though it contains a lossless main soundtrack (DTS HD MA), it doesn't contain a Dolby Digital 5.1 sountrack (like the majority of all DVDs); it only contains a Dolby Digital 4-channel version of Pro Logic. So believe it or not, unless you have DTS gear (most people don't; most don't even have Dolby Digital gear), you can actually get better sound (full-range in all channels) from the DVD version of this movie than the HD version...if you at least have Dolby Digital equip.
I know it's a decision by the film-makers, but it's a bad decision (and will only confuse the public even more) to not include Dolby Digital 5.1 English tracks on all Blu-ray movies...along with whatever lossless tracks they want; to keep them backwards compatible with the majority of people that now have DVD. BTW, the animated menu/sounds/music for this movie IS in Dolby Digital 5.1, strangely enough.
I have a dedicated Home theater, and I'm an early adopter..when it makes sense; but I'll be even more careful in selecting Blu-ray titles now, after discovering this. Can't even always go by the packaging either (this happened even back when DVD was introduced).
The same goes for RAMBO BTW...no English DD5.1 tracks...even though some of the packaging says so; it does have FRENCH Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks though! Go figure.
