Amazon.com While not yet part of mainstream American music, Middle Eastern music, as evidenced by the rise of Algerian pop star Khaled in France, has sidled up to other club music forms in the hot spots of Paris, London, and elsewhere. To that end, Putumayo's Arabic Groove brings us up to date with their compilation, a jubilant sonic party rooted in ancient musical tradition and structure, steeped in the au courant flavors of hip-hop, R&B, and other urban western forms. Lebanese, Egyptian, Moroccan, and Algerian artists such as former Londoner Natacha Atlas (who has been featured with both Transglobal Underground and Jah Wobble) contribute 11 songs which lend themselves to sensual dance, exotic drink, and glamorous gatherings of multicultural hipsters. Traditional Arabic instruments such as the flute and oud blend with guitar, bass, and drums, laying down plenty of funk, fun, and full-on booty-shaking rhythms. A heady high point is the disco-nomad jam "Leiley," a Transglobal Underground remix of a hit by Lebanese songstress Dania. Arabic Groove is a feast of a sampler. --Paige La Grone

Catchy hip Arabic dance music June 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really like this CD. The music features popular (mid 2000s) artists from various Arab countries. I think it's a good sampling. I really like music with a fast beat and a lot of energy and this album has that.
This will definitely hook you! August 29, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this CD for a party, and I really enjoyed it. I listen to it in my car a lot, great dance music, much of it is really lovely and catchy, and the arab singing style on most of these tracks is pretty low-key --- not too intense for western ears. Nice too, for checking out different artists, to see which ones you would like to hear more of. Definitely recommend it!

The first song sounded really cool, so I ordered the album. It's average, at best. Also to note: It is NOT a kids' album. I mistook it for Putumayo Kids, but that's my fault. I wish they would make an Arabic album along the lines of World Playground or French Playground!

Middle Eastern music at it's best. I am quite satisfied with this purchase. As a matter of fact I purchased an additional one for a friend. Putmayo is the best.
