Classic 80's February 24, 2008 I remember this album very well. I used to have the vinyl copy and I would play it everyday. This is one of those albums, with no filler songs and just a play through album. Favorites included Head To Toe,Lost In Emotion,Everything Will B-Fine,Playing With Fire, and I Promise You. If your looking for great 80's dance music, look no further than to the awesome group "Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam". Make sure you pick up a copy of this album!
Not entirely perfect, but still a great piece of 80s nostalgia March 17, 2007 Unless you're a die-hard fan who's listened to this again and again, some of the non-hits may be boring, but if you want one of the best dance-pop songs of the 80s, "Lost In Emotion" definitely belongs in such a pantheon.
Good & catchy December 28, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A good & catchy & typical Full Force production. Lisa Velez has a fine but strong voice. This album contains the main hits "Lost in emotion" and "Head to toe" and is one of the strongest Lisa Lisa & cult jam albums. "Someone to love me for me" is a beautiful ballad & duet with Full Force.
CONSISTENT FOLLOW-UP September 21, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The second release from the group who many credit with first combining hip hop and r&b follows in the same vain as their debut "LISA LISA AND CULT JAM WITH FULL FORCE". It combines freestyle "A fool is born everyday", 60's girl group vibe ("Lost in emotion", a #1 hit), r&b ("Everything will b-fine", another top 10 r&b hit) and funky-pop ("Head to toe", another #1 smash). Of course a simmering duet with FULL FORCE is on board ("Someone to love me for me", top 10 r&b again!). This duet is really nice with it's gospel overtones about loving someone for the content of their character instead of material things. FULL FORCE AND LISA LISA work well together and the production is tight throughout this cd as well. CULT JAM member SPANADOR shares a lead with LISA LISA on the grinding "I Promise you". It is a wonder why he didnt sing lead more. The song is really catchy. Another good song is "A face in the crowd". A jamming snare drum rocks the beat on this one and the song has a catchy hook. Though not much different from the debut, this one had more commercial appeal and catered to a more pop audience. The freestyle was sacraficed for a more pop following. Not that it is bad, considering the great song writing and LISA LISA's mature vocals. She wasnt even 20 years old yet! A great pickup for any fan of 80's r&b!
A '80s DANCE CLASSIC September 6, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've owned this album on vinyl from it's original release and I've loved it for years. I'm not much into dance music but "Spanish Fly" is by far an '80s freestyle/pop classic. Lisa Lisa's girlish pipes and Full Force's pounding, funky production go together like a hand in glove. It's perfect! Pounding numbers like "Everything Will Be Fine", the #1 "Head To Toe", "Face In The Crowd", and the hella funky "I Promise You" will get even the most fridgid wallflower moving. The ballad with Full Force "Someone To Love Me For Me" is up there with the classic "All Cried Out" in terms of emotion. And the playful, girl group-inspired "Lost In Emotion" will make you feel good and you nostaglic for the days of jheri curls, the Wop, and laceless Adadis. Too bad they make dance-pop/R&B like this anymore. "Spanish Fly" is by far a late '80s dance pop classic that established Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam( Spanador and Mike Hughes) as HUGE stars. Although they would release two more albums that flopped commerically, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam AND Full Force are currently back in the studio...time will tell what we're in for but rest assure "Spanish Fly" will forever keep feets moving and the late '80s alive! :-)
