Product Description
Featuring: Bob Cooper, Herb Geller (reeds), Pete Jolly, Gerry Wiggins (p), Red Norvo (vb), Red Mitchell (b), Alvin Stoller, Joe Morello (d), Bill Holman, Marty Paich, Jack Montrose and Bob Enevoldsen (arrangements) Soon after he arrived in Los Angeles in 1950, Howard Roberts became one of the most in-demand jazz guitarists in the city's clubs and studios. He spent six years as a sideman before Verve's Norman Granz gave him the chance to record his first album as a leader (tracks 1-10). As the notes on the album liner put it, "The works he has chosen represent a startling divergence of styles and impressions, significantly all under the sensitive control of a basic musical conception, which is seriously concerned with all aesthetic expression." All the arrangements are well thought out, and the individual musicians' interpretations are original without straying away from the Roberts-planned format. The last five tracks on this CD were recorded in the same period by IntroRecords as part of an album entitled "Collections." No written arrangements were used. Instead, there is an atmosphere of spontaneous interaction that makes these performances a delight.Seranata Burlesca / I Hear A Rhapsody / The Innocents / Ah-Moore / (Back Home In) Indiana / Indian Summer / Jillzie / My Shining Hour / Polka Dots And Moonbeams / An Orchid For Miss Sterling / Little Girl / A Ghost Of A Chance / Have You Met Miss Jones? / Ive Got The World On A String / Sweet Georgia Brown

5 out of 5 stars Mr Guitar   August 4, 2008

Howard Roberts started his career as a recording jazzman with the first ten tunes contained in this album by Fresh Sounds. Originally it came out on Verve and it was an album full of stars in the arrangements department as in the playing roles. Bill Holman, Marty Paich, Jack Montrose, Bob Envoldsen were the arrangers while the players were Red Norvo, Pete Jolly, Bob Cooper and Alvin Stoller. What you can hear in this album are different settings, trio, quartet, quintet and string sections. The music is always interesting. Howard plays really really well in all the situations. This is a straight ahead jazz date (two different dates actually) and not an album similar to the Capitol ones that Howard recorded later on, that in my opinion are the ones that form the legacy of Mr Roberts original sounds (albums that I love so much). But this one it's really great in its own right. It shows a master at work among many other masters, ... something that does not happen anymore unfortunatly. A very good records that I suggest to all the fans of good, really good Jazz (the years are 1956/1957).
