5 out of 5 stars This is a must !   June 2, 2008
This album is a must for any jazz collection. The live performance is amazing. These two performers and the side men produce a sound that has that groove that stays with you. I had the vinyl of this for many years and it is nice to get a CD of it that still has that sound (without the warmth of hiss and scratches).

Got the c.d. quickly, in great shape - love the c.d! Especially, "Compared to What"

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff - One of my first jazz records   March 10, 2008

I'm a serious musician and a student of jazz for almost 40 years. Swiss Movement is great stuff, funky, soulful, good improvisations. Fun listening. Probably the first jazz recording that caught my attention way back in 1972(ish).

However, people calling this one of, if not the greatest, jazz concert ever show a seriously deficient knowledge of the jazz idiom and its history. Either that or such a person has lost his/her mind. Good art isn't about competition folks. Why can't it be enough to write "This is a great live concert captured for release by Atlantic and I really like it a lot", hmmmmmm? Maybe those folks spend to much time reading liner notes or watching American Idol?

I love this record but it isn't even close to the caliber of performance on say... Coltrane at the Village Vanguard or Miles in Berlin or Miles at Antibes or how about Miles at Lincoln Center (surely that IS one of the finest performances ever released (My Funny Valentine and Four and More). Swiss Movement, while very very good, ain't even close. I could probably type out at least a dozen live performances released on CD that are far superior with respect to the musicianship and the dynamic on stage. BUT - this is a great CD, fun to listen to and worthy of your hard-earned pennies. So buy it, I'm an expert (ha ha)

5 out of 5 stars yes yes yes   January 20, 2008
We have missed this album so much since switching to CDs. We finally
gave in and bought it again. And, it is always exciting and like an old
friend, just gets more relevant as we age. Ann

2 out of 5 stars Great performance. Poor sound.   May 30, 2007

This review is related to the Japanease release (mini-LP replica) of Swiss Movement.
This is one of the greatest jazz performances. Spirit. Soul. Life. Drum. Ecstasy. But the sound quality is of big questione. Yes, it is dated to 60's. Yes, it was recorded at the concert. But the bonus track showcases how good the sound quality could have been on this release. On all other tracks you hear drums, keyboards and voice in your left channel and the horns in your right channel. Bass is almost not defined and is boom-boom box rather than a set of strings. The audience is in your right channel, too.
This is a great piece of jazz (probably, a must have). But it is definitely not an audiophile record or even close to it.
