This 1975 release is a masterpiece of soul jazz, with keyboardist Bob James providing the arrangements for Grover Washington's emotive saxophones. James's opening "Earth Tones" has Washington playing soprano over a weave of percussion and electronics that suggests the influence of Miles Davis's electric fusion work, while "Passion Flower," a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington's composing partner, Billy Strayhorn, has Washington's soprano backed by rich strings. His tenor is potent and soulful on the punchy version of "Mr. Magic" and funkier still on the James-Washington collaboration "Black Frost." Eric Gale turns in some superb guitar solos, and the studio band, anchored by taut backbeats from bassist Gary King and drummer Harvey Mason, is first-rate. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars Another gem for Mr. Washington.   November 6, 2007
Yet another spectacular gem from the master of the sax. Your neck muscles will be ten times larger after a week of wearing out the groove in this record and bobbing your head to the funky, FUNKY Black Frost. Did I say funky? Funky as #$%@. The title track is also a classic. Do yourself a favor and get it with Reed Seed.

5 out of 5 stars The Original   September 3, 2007
So this is the album that I played TO DEATH in college. The groundbreaking (now smooth jazz) album that got my attention. I have been listening to smooth jazz (and to Grover) ever since (30 years). If you are looking for something "new" (that is not) I suggest you give this one a try. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Spectacular Tones Of Grover!   June 16, 2007

Grover Washington, actually pretty early in his career at this point just about floored the jazz funk saxophone world with "Mister Magic".The album starts out with the 12 plus minute "Earth Tones"-starting itself with gentle nature sound effects and then lurching into a deep, primal jazz/funk groove with Grover's sax permateating every cravass in between! And those nature songs and bubbly guitar just melt around the songs like carmel! And a cover of the Billy Strayhorn classic "Passion Flower" is given a treatment not dissimilar to Coltrane. And then there's that title song-a moodily grooving slice of funk with deep beats and light, sensual orchestration to die for-not to mention having one of the FUNKIEST bottoms your going to hear! And the whole thing is capped off with "Black Frost" whitch does'nt change alot!'Mister Magic' swings in and out of tempo's,from jazz to funk and back all in little more then half an hour and is CLEARLY Grover Washington's artitic statement of intent and those who only know him for albums like Winelight your going to be in for quiet a surprise! If only he were here today to make more music like this-I know alot of people who'd like to hear it.I would!

5 out of 5 stars Hits the sweet spot   January 3, 2006

Talented, versatile and confident, are a few words that can describe Grover's cuts.
He is one of the very few, who has able grasps a constant following for all the years he has gifted us.

He fluidly morph from his early days of traditional, to (what most of us remember him as) one the funkiest saxes with the CTI and Motown years, then to his latter years of smooth jazz, he has always kept us captivated with certain cuts we all can say "Ah man, that's Grover!" He was one who never stayed in the back of the pack with the changing times, and didn't limited himself with certain fortes.

I have been listening to Grover for over 35 years and his music still hits the senses of the soul. In my collection over the years, his name is repeated the most. Mr. Magic was his signature cut, but if you want pure funky Grover, take a listen to Black frost, it's all him, no other solos are used and I think it's his best tenor works of its time. He goes from high to low, short to long notes and even does battle with the horn section. I'm reviewing this album only because this was the first Grover album I purchased way back.

To get the full spectrum of Grover you must check out his other albums, Feels so Good, (Knucklehead) Reed Seed, (Loran's Dance) Paradise, and Live at the Bijou are a few. Go by the ratings and you won't go wrong. Grover will be missed, never forgotten and never gets old.
