| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com The surprise here isn't that Andreas Vollenweider has recorded a Christmas CD. The surprise is it took him this long to do it. He's never recorded covers before, but his mixture of fantasy and exotica make him a perfect candidate to score a Yuletide album. At his best, he makes these carols sound like they fell full-blown on his harp. He completely reworks the familiar themes not the way a jazz band might, improvising solos off the main melody, but completely recasting the melody itself. On the best songs, including "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Yorkshire Wassail," he fragments and inverts the tune, often using only the seed of the carol for his explorations. Vollenweider goes beyond the traditional repertoire with songs like "Over the Hills and Over the Vale," an adaptation of the medieval "In Vernale Tempore" that he turns into a chamber music jaunt with recorders, cellos, and percussion. Although he makes meticulously crafted music, it's easy to forget that Vollenweider creates most of his work through improvisation. That is the key to these personal interpretations of Christmas carols on. Longtime but occasional collaborator Carly Simon turns up on several tunes, and--helped by greeting-card instrumental versions of "Carol of the Drums" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (on which she does not perform)--threatens to push the album into maudlin terrain. That's the nature of the Christmas beast, but despite these lapses, they still don't sabotage the often simple charm of Vollenweider's inventive, nostalgically gilded instrumentals. --John Diliberto

Midnight Clear CD December 31, 2007 As always, Vollenweider music is completely enchanting and Midnight Clear is exactly that. Such a beautiful collection of old and new holiday music which my husband and I loved so much that we played it more than any other holiday album and will enjoy it all year as well. Thank you, Andreas Vollenweider and all the other members of your group, for giving us such a beautiful musical treasure!
Not the Usual Xmas Music (That's Good!) November 30, 2007 I'm not a fan of the sort of corny and insipid Christmas music that starts blasting at us from all sides earlier every year. I am a big fan of Vollenweider, and one of the things I love about him is his originality. So I cringed last year when I heard he got on the bandwagon and put out a Christmas album. I didn't even listen to it until recently... and wow, was I missing out! Only Vollenweider can make this music so fresh and appealing. Christmas or not, this is just beautiful music.
Latest Andreas Vollenweider CD February 12, 2007
Very good if you enjoy New Age music. I have been listening to Vollenweider for many years. this CD also has Carly Simon on several numbers.
Any time of year February 9, 2007 I purchased this CD because it has a couple of tracks with vocals by the one and only Carly Simon. Carly Simon and Andreas have collaberated over many years, and this is the latest one. Don't be fooled in to thinking though that this is just a Christmas album, because it's certainly not. In fact you can put this on any time of year and it can be played gently in the background to envelope your dinner party guests! The Christmas themes are there, but they are quite subtle (unlike me!). Andreas plays the harp and if you like to be soothed this will certainly do the trick. And if you love the timbre of Carly's gorgeous voice, you won't be dissapointed either!
I played it twice January 18, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been a Vollenweider fan for as long as I can remember. When I saw a new CD by him I bought two copies so I could turn someone else on to his music. I am sad to say that this collaboration with Carly didn't work for me. There is not enough Andreas playing his contemporary style and arrangements for harp. What was there was rarely exciting or inspired. This CD will get one more play before it get relegated to the back of the pile. Too bad.
