Another piece of art by Tommy Emmanuel June 9, 2008 "Center Stage" is the latest "piece of art" by the magnificent guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel. All the executions and arrangements are amazing and never trivial. The sound quality is excellent, although "Center Stage" is a live recording. The tracklist is enriched by unpublished songs as "The Finger Lakes" and traditional songs (Amazing Grace, Georgia On My Mind, House of the Risin' Sun). Some executions of Tommy's songs are impressive: "Initiation" (terrific) or "Mombasa". Tommy is a real "one-man-band" and in "Nine Pound Hammer" shows to be able to sing and play guitar at the same time incredibly well. For the umpteenth time Tommy Emmanuel demonstrates to be already a "piece of hystory" of music.
Great 2 album set June 7, 2008 Tommy Emmanuel's Center Stage is a wonderful mixture of guitar, harmonica, vocals and percussion. It is a "must have" for Tommy fans.
Great Live performance of a legendary artist!! June 4, 2008 Full marks to Tommy for a splendid and enjoyable concert. A very tiny flaw (in my opinion, of course) is that the live performance mix makes it difficult to hear all the nuances of Tommy's playing. Some of his more aggressive playing sounds harsher than it should, very likely because it wasn't captured the way a studio mike would get it.
Having seen him live, I tend to think this is just an artifact of the recording process.
Now that's out of the way, this album is as close a substitute as you'll find for attending a concert. If you're new to T.E. it continues a superb series of solo CD releases starting with Endless Road. He freshens some of his favorites, adding a new perspective on his Beatles Medley, and building up to Mombasa with an inspired percussion solo. Tommy brings out Bob Littell (harmonica) to add some color to Disc 2. The guitar/harmonica combo works well, though it sounded like Bob Littell was holding back some of his best riffs on this performance. He's an amazing harp player, and perhaps the best glimpse of that is on Amazing Grace.
Some new material makes it onto both Discs, and his monologue is entertaining as it brings you a little closer to that feeling of being in the audience.
Overall, a 4.5, with a 5.0 for musicianship of course.
A Masterpiece May 23, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This work is quite simply a masterpiece from a great master. Truly the greatest person to come from wonderful Australia, Tommy is THE best disciple of the late Chet Atkins, and I can see Chet now sitting in heaven with his MP3 player listening to this and smiling and tapping his feet along with his friend Tommy. Sit on your evening porch just before sunset with a glass of ice tea, put on your headphones and listen to a man who makes a small room a cathedral of wondrous sound. His fingers are golden, his sound is perfect, his music is breathtaking. He makes an acoustic guitar sound like an orchestra. And if you ever get to see Tommy in a live performance, your life will be forever changed for the better.
Captures the Brilliance of One of the Best May 22, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was fortunate enough to hear Tommy Emmanuel live in concert in May of this year (2008). From the opening notes to the last encore, he was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever heard.
His technical skill is amazing, but he's about more than flash. He plays with a wide range of deep human emotion, and does it all with great wit.
This recording captures the essence of that experience. It's a live concert recording that finds him at his best, showing off his skills, and connecting and communicating with the audience. It may sound like hyperbole, but this recording has rocketed onto my list of my favorite recordings of all time.
If you haven't heard Tommy, this recording is the place to start!
