Album Description If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.
Album Description 2009 release from the multi-million selling singer, songwriter, musician and former leader of The Police. This release is dedicated to Sting's favorite season, Winter: a season which has inspired countless songwriters over the centuries and produced a wealth of music exploring all of its many guises. If On a Winter's Night... presents an arc of songs that conjures the season of spirits, resulting in a haunting, spiritual and reflective musical journey. ''The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material,'' comments Sting; ''by filtering all of these disparate styles into one album, I hope we have created something refreshing and new.''

soul cake..... November 21, 2009 Momofrr (Central Illinois USA) I am and always have been a Sting fan. On this collection, I love half of this music and the other half, I could do without. I love the new arrangements of old favorites like Gabriel's Message and The Hounds of Winter. The Snow It Melts the Soonest is a lovely arrangement of a song I'm familiar with from a Celtic CD of Christmas songs. Christmas At Sea, wonderful. Sometimes songs grow on me after I've heard them a few times. I hope that is the case here, but I really am not interested in listening for a second time some of these songs, such as Cherry Tree Carol. I would say if you are a Sting fan, you should have this CD. What I intend to do is download the songs I want to listen to and that will be that.
An Advent album November 20, 2009 cns (Washington DC) As a singer in a choir and an a cappella group, and a lover of music, I've always been slightly annoyed that people want to go straight to Christmas without going through Advent, and there is not enough Advent music out there. Advent is a time when it's getting progressively darker and colder. "They" put Christmas in late December because it's the time of year when, even though most of winter is yet to come, the days miraculously start getting longer again-- but that only comes after the introspection and diminishing of hope in the Advent season.
My point is that Sting has focused on that cold and dark, which is so important if you're going to appreciate the warmth and light and hope that Christmas represents. So what he's made is an Advent album. I don't listen to much pop music, but when I heard him sing The Snow It Melts the Soonest on NPR, it reminded me of the Incredible String Band and all that cool druidic/Child ballad-y stuff from my youth. That's beside my point about Advent, but I wanted to make it anyway. I bought it and I've been listening to it and enjoying it.
I gave it only four stars because I generally like either the serious, non-pop iterations of these songs, or else the totally out-there ISB. I get annoyed by the melisma that's so popular now, and that I just heard him do on Track 8 as I write this.
mysterious winter moods November 20, 2009 Tendraftsdeep I have been a fan of the Police and Sting for ages. The only part of Sting's career I have avoided are his last couple solo records. Until now. This album is almost like a good movie to me instead of a collection of songs. It really does reflect the mystery, enchantment, sadness and also hope of the winter season. This not a cd for the car stereo, but rather a night time candle light or fireside cd while the cold winds blow outside. And although I have listened to the album once, I am actually saving repeated listens of this disc to do just that. This is a nice work of art.
Very nice, indeed November 19, 2009 DonMac (Lynn, MA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes, I am a Sting fan. Yes, I think he can be a bit pretentious. Yes, I remember and liked The Police. This is a really nice album. It does a great job at settting a "winter mood" and as a New Englander, I know winter. It's is dreamy, a little theatrical, holiday-ish - but overall, grand. A great effort for those who enjoy lilting or sweeping background music. Enjoy!
On a Winter's Night, by Sting November 19, 2009 Ursula Pritchard (Vancouver, BC Canada) Lovely music from and by Sting. I enjoyed it very much and wish I had bought the DVD which, as I saw later, was also available.
