Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). You can clearly hear fraternal magic at work in the songs of Scott and Seth Avett, better known as the Avett Brothers, as well.

That magic is abundantly evident on I and Love and You, the Avett Brothers' big-label debut, produced by Rick Rubin. Its 13 songs are delivered in a style that defies pigeonholing but might be described as a rootsy amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop - even a jab of punk-style dynamics here and there.

With I and Love and You, The Avett Brothers have taken a giant step forward.

Album Description
I and Love and You is The Avett Brothers' major label debut, produced by Grammy-award winning producer Rick Rubin. 4 out of 5 stars Great music!   February 28, 2010

This is my first foray into the alt-country genre, and I loved it! I must mention that I am not a big country fan, but I found this refreshing!

Like another poster said I haven't been following the music scene much of late. Was just lost in my existing music. Rarely listening to the radio. Music had become kind of stagnant.

Somehow I had missed these guys. Came home from a night out, flopped down on the couch and turned on the tube. Austin City Limits was coming on. The Avett Brothers. Well, who are these guys? They played, "I and Love and You". I thought it was one of the best songs I had heard in years. I sat straight up and watched mesmerized as they played 7 or 8 songs. Besides the songwriting, which is magnificent, it was their sheer talent that struck me. How many different instruments both these guys were proficient with was amazing. They switched from lead to backing, from piano, to drums, to mandolin, to violin. A stunning display of musicianship. When the kick drum was used as a lead instrument I was just blown away. Very creative.

Found a friend who had a copy of this. I was so sure I was going to be disappointed. How could they translate that stage performance to studio? Surely something would be lost? I was so wrong. And for that I give Rick Rubin tremendous credit. I cannot imagine a better album coming out this year. I just cannot. Listening to this reminded me of the first time I heard "August and Everything After". You know this music is going to endure. The songwriting oddly reminds me of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. Listened to some of their earlier work but that made me truly appreciate the production on this record even more. Just a fuller sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, but a departure from their Past Albums   February 25, 2010

This mood of this album is quite different from the Avett brothers' previous releases. There is a clear shift from the upbeat folk-style to a sadder, more mellow one. As opposed to strings like the Fiddle, Mandolin, Banjo etc., Piano really dominates on this album. It is however, still a great album that any Avett brothers fan should pick up. The songs are well composed, beautiful, full of depth and insight feelings of love (as the title says), loss, joy, sadness. I think this album would have been more aptly titled "Emotionalism". Again, there are no songs I find myself skipping past, and am very happy with the purchase. The title track is amazing, as is "January Wedding", "Head Full of Doubt", "And it Spread", and "Laundry Room". I have "Minionette", "Four Thieves Gone", "I & Love & You", and "Emotionalism". Out of the 4, this is a close-tie as my favorite with "Emotionalism". If you're going to start with one album, choose Emotionalism, but then quickly follow it up with this. If you dig the more upbeat style of Emotionalism, your next purchase should be Minionette. Enjoy, and don't pass this up!

If you're interested to know my thoughts on the other albums mentioned. Check the reviews for that particular album.

5 out of 5 stars Why an artist's body of work is important.   January 30, 2010

The title track from this new album is so outstanding that one is tempted to limit their spending, cough-up a buck to download that track, and go tripping merrily down Melody Lane. But one would learn little about music, and nothing about the creative process of true artists, and the Avett Brothers certainly fall into that select few. For this appreciator, a large part of the enjoyment of any artistic effort is the constant learning process involved in exposing oneself to new material. Through the screen of their gift, the Avett Brothers sifted the songs they had on hand to a reduction of the thirteen numbers they chose to represent the statement they choose to make at this exact moment in their career. We learn from painters by viewing their body of work. Gallery owners, or museum curators hanging a retrospective, do not pare a body of work down to a single image to represent that painter's view of the world. So buy the album, enjoy, learn and so be enriched.
