Album Description
Electric Dirt (Dirt Farmer Music/Vanguard Records) is the second album in the last two years from American musical treasure Levon Helm. Its predecessor, the GRAMMY-winning Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levon's near miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band. Electric Dirt again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land and those who live by it, but this record goes deeper and wider, incorporating gospel, blues and soul elements in a bracing collection of originals and carefully chosen outside songs. As with Dirt Farmer, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell took the reigns as producer and the album was recorded at "The Barn"- Levon Helm Studios. "Our objective here was to take the honesty, innocence and purity of the Dirt Farmer record which represents a true element of what Levon is all about, but also expand on that and explore deeper the goldmine of Levon's musical artistry" states Campbell.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music   November 2, 2009
Music Lover (Rhode Island, USA)
I can't add much to the many glowing reviews already posted other than to say I think this album is just about perfect. Helm's voice is as real as you can get - you gotta love it (warts and all). The best album I've purchased in recent memory.

3 out of 5 stars Not too overHelmed   October 30, 2009
Ari Kurki (Evitskog, Finland)
At first I have to say that I have been a Levon Helm fan since they drove old dixie down with The Band. And I still am a fan. The album is good and most of the songs are good. A couple of them almost very good.
BUT after listening this several times I must confess that Levon's creaking old-timer singing style and voice have started to bug me a bit. It would have been a good idea to have part of the songs sung by another vocalist or at least with a different manner.
Anyways, all and all and within these limits a fairly nice listening experience. But to be honest I must say that for a while I have to leave the album to gather dirt on the shelf and have a loooonger pause with it. Perhaps some time next year I shall be ready for another go.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it from the first listen   October 19, 2009
Jack L. Walker (Mishawaka, IN United States)
I don't buy much new music. And when I do, it may take several listens to have it grow on me. But this album I loved from the first listen. If I was a professional musician, I could only wish to make music like this. And from Levon Helm who must be getting up there in years. The songs are such a great mix of folk, gospel, blues, jazz, and any number of influences. Especially loved Tennessee Jed. Would have made Jerry Garcia proud. Speaking of which, in some ways this album reminds me of the Jerry Garcia Band. If you like them or Bob Dylan or of course the old "The Band" releases, you almost certainly would like this release. The only song I wonder about is "Golden Bird" which makes the listener wonder if Levon will live to finish the song. But it still isn't really a bad song. People tend to over-use the word underrated, such as in sports. This album made me think that maybe we have underrated Levon Helm as a singer and musician. Robbie Robertson may have written most of the material, but I can now see that "The Band" would not have achieved near as much fame and influence if Levon Helm had not been in them, singing so many great tunes. And not just singing, but applying great musicianship, which is so evident in this release. Gonna have to go out and get "Dirt Farmer" next.

This is a really great album - Levon is wonderful and everyone else on this recording is terrific - Amy, John, Theresa. Great job!
