Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
No Line on the Horizon is the twelfth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released on 27 February 2009. The album is U2's first since 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, the longest gap between studio albums in the band's career. The material was originally intended to be released as two EPs, titled Daylight and Darkness, but the band later decided to combine them into one album.

5 out of 5 stars I guess it's the mainstream music, that is causing listeners to become more unappreciative of music...   March 16, 2010
I am deeply disappointed with the rating this album received, now I'm not a die-hard U2 fan, I used to be in AC/DC in fact, but this is a good album. The problem is that bands now a days produce albums with one or two good songs... Why? Because one song can get a band rich, just one, through digitial sells. That's why albums are so lame, and lack in effort.

Music used to be better, just remember the 60's, 70's, and the 80's, the albums were great. Cream, Led Zeppelin, Velvet Undergroud, Guns N' Roses, and etc... But, there is music like that still out there, it just needs a little more work to find, because those bands don't the attention the popular bands get.

I pretty obvious why this album only got 3.5 out of 5, it's because the other songs from the album don't have the curve appeal like "Magnificent" does. What did you expect out of the album? Eleven different versions of the song "Magnificent?"

I rate this album **** out of *****. It's not their worst(no way), but It's no Achtung, or ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND.

Here's a list of the GOOD bands:

1. The White Stripes (Alt. Rock)
2. The Dead Weather (Blues Rock)
3. Them Crooked Vultures (Blues Rock)
4. The Raconteurs (Rock)
5. Acrtic Monkeys (Ind. Rock)
6. Cold Play (Rock/ Pop)

Thanks, for reading my review!

2 out of 5 stars The First U2 Album That Bored Me   March 3, 2010

I've been a big U2 fan since the early nineties, when as a sophomore in high school I received my very first CD player. One of the first CDs I bought was U2's The Joshua Tree. When Achtung Baby came out, it was like a revelation and cemented my interest in this talented foursome. Through the years, I've acquired their back catalog and waited with anticipation for each new release. I've seen other fans express disgust with Zooropa, Pop, and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, but I've always believed that great artists cannot remain stuck in the past, but must evolve as time passes. So I just want to make clear that I don't yearn for U2 to make another Achtung Baby or The Unforgettable Fire, or sound like they did in the past. They've made those records and they don't need to make them again.

In fact, one of the things that I've loved so much about U2 is their refusal to make the same album over and over again, to push their boundaries, and create new sounds. I've always wanted to hear what they would come up with next, and for the first time I feel disappointed by the result. There just doesn't seem to be anything special here, no tracks that really stand out. The lyrics seem very weak to me, continuing a trend from the last couple of records, but this time there's some pretty bland music to go along with them. That's the first time I've really felt that way about a U2 record. There's also a couple of really awful songs on this album, namely "Stand Up Comedy" and "Get On Your Boots". There are a few songs I thought were okay, like "FEZ-Being Born" and "White As Snow", but even they aren't very memorable. As a whole, the album just feels very banal.

I've listened to No Line On The Horizon several times and aside from the really bad tracks, none really leave a lasting impression or make me want to take the CD off the shelf and listen to it again. It really hurts me to say this, as U2 has been my favorite band for over a decade and have produced some very exciting music. I won't give up on them just yet, but for the first time I find myself looking forward to their next release not with anticipation, but with trepidation.

2 out of 5 stars A Decade of Dissapointment and Gradual Decline   March 2, 2010

I have intentionally held off writing a review for this album due to the fact I wanted time to wrap my head (and ears) around it for a while. Mine is but a single opinion in a chorus of several, but I feel compelled to at least honestly share my thoughts on the album, though looking through the reviews here, I am in the minority opinion.

The required U2 "street cred" intro, I have been a U2 fan since The Unforgettable Fire, have seen them live on many occasions, and been a die-hard collector of all things U2 up until about 10 years ago, when I began to have a casual attitude towards the band following ATYCLB. To the review of NLOTH.

To call this album schizophrenic would be polite, and I do not mean that in a complimentary "taking experimental artsy" liberties kind of way (I even enjoyed Passengers, if that's any consolation). The album simply has no melodic coherence to it, it does not flow, does not "click", indeed it never seems to arrive at any destination. The album feels broken and unfinished, and going by its rather haphazard development history one can see why. None of the tracks flow into one another, and many of the tracks themselves suffer from over-production (see Fez-Being Born) that simply makes the album an incoherent mess.

There are some good tracks on here, but not many. I enjoyed the tracks No Line on the Horizon, Magnificent and Moment of Surrender, but even then I cannot rank any of these tracks even close to U2's best. Musically the tracks are disjointed, and I see far too much of Eno's influence here. Whereas before he maintained at least a partial hands-off approach, this in many ways feels like "Passengers 2". Most tracks have an Eno influenced synth-intro that has nothing to do with the tracks themselves, and greatly contributes to the effect of making the album sound "broken". I have nothing against synth/techno U2 when it's done in a cohesive, melodic way (see Zooropa).

Another serious problem is Bono's lyrics. While in the past Bono has at times come across as cliched, here he takes it to a whole new level, "Playing with the fire Til the fire played with me" indeed. Lyrically (and taking maturity into account, it would be unfair to compare this to "Boy") this is Bono's weakest album. There are some interesting musical directions explored here by the band (with the Edge occasionally finding solid ground), but it is never taken to another level, or indeed even to a satisfactory conclusion. The sad part is U2 are still capable of making great music (find the excellent "unreleased" tracks "Smile" and "Mercy" to see what I mean), but they are lacking direction.

In closing, with all honesty I have to say this is U2's weakest album IMHO, and has capped off what has been a steady decade of gradual decline beginning with the uninspired, yet still eminently listenable ATYCLB, and it's further disappointing follow-up HTDAAB. Do they have anything left in the tank creatively? Who knows, but one can always hope......

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Cooks?   February 21, 2010

What do you do when you've done it all? You experiment. Doing so helped U2 create its most memorable album, Achtung Baby, when Brian Eno drove the band to new heights. Here Eno joins U2's other best producer/ arrangers, Steve Lillywhite and Daniel Lanois. Solo, they once helped the little band that could make beautiful, simple, unique music that was all passion against a wall of soulless corporate pop. But here the triumvirate's combined efforts result merely in overkill.

If you've always liked U2, you may not like No Line. Then again, if you've never liked them, you may like this album-- it's that out of synch. Bono here waxes so poetic it almost doesn't fit the music. Thus there is little of the Edge's pensive noodling, and little empty space to hear it in. For what it's worth, "Get Your Boots On" is almost an exact copy musically of Larry Norman's "Readers Digest" from his 1972 album, Only Visiting This Planet Only Visiting This Planet Mark Knopfler also has almost copied it in the past. Is Norman's song so unknown that it's not an issue? Is the tune so generic, like 12 bar blues, that anyone might instinctively play it? There's also a lyrical line from a Norman song on this album. One genius subconsciously borrowing from another? A tribute? I merely note that George Harrison got sued for unconsciously "borrowing" bits of "My Sweet Lord" from another song that sounds far less like it than in this case.

Could you even play any of these songs unplugged? It remains true that when an older U2 song comes on the radio, it's a breath of fresh air, both musically and lyrically. Perhaps the magic of U2 lies in a simpler recipe, with one chef at a time.

5 out of 5 stars A work of power and beauty, give it a chance   February 20, 2010

After U2 got snubbed for most of the key Grammy awards, the discerning music media then began to fawn over this album. "Most deserving" (but won't win best Rock Album), "a jewel", "the best album no one is listening to", "a masterpiece" - are some of the things printed more recently about the album. Rolling Stone's Grammy preview said, "It wasn't a huge hit, but U2's 13th album fused studio experimentalism with great pop song writing."

If you are a fair weather U2 fan (i.e., if it's not SBS, WOWY, WTSHNN, One or Bad you can't stand them), then you should pass. However, if you have a long-time appreciation for the band's willingness to take chances and overlay great lyrics with raucus, elevating musical etherialism, you will like, if not love, this album.

Since Achtung Baby it has taken me 3 or 6 listenings to really get in to U2 albums. NLOTH is no exception. However, after a few listens I found this album to be infectious. The opening track is powerful and raw, and was great in concert! "Magnificent" is, well, a great rock song (that would have been a bigger hit if accompanied by a video on par with the song itself). "I'll Go Crazy" is a classic U2 song that should resonate with everyone who loves "Beautiful Day", "Stuck in a Moment", and "Mysterious Ways". One review in RS stated that "Moment of Surrener" was U2's greatest ballad since "With or Without You". At over six minutes it was not radio friendly, but a stirring, melodious tune nonetheless. "Get on our boots" is just plan fast and fun, where Bono uses his lyrical prowess to string together lines that really sum up what they have been talking about their entire careers. "White as Snow" is a beautiful song, and "Breathe" is as inspirational as anything I've heard from U2 in a long time (and was a great opener in concert). While not as powerful as more recent closers ("Grace" and "Yaweh"), "Cedars of Lebanon" is a power memiore for our time.

As with most albums, there are a couple of weak spots. I'm still trying to figure out "Fez-Being Born", but even here, I do appreciate the musicianship of the track. "Unknown Caller" is a simple track, which has hints of "Zooropa", but again, the music is strong and is easy to listen to, even if not as strong as the first half of the album.

Finally, there is significant influence from Eno and Lanois on this album - they are even credited as co-writers on about half of the songs. For those who "loved" U2 of the 80's and early 90's - Brian and Danny were huge influences on those songs, and their craftsmanship and creativity only enhance NLOTH.

Buy it. Listen objectively several times. Love it forever.
