Album Description Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul. Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication". Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand. These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . .

Melody, what have you done???!!?? March 9, 2010 Daniel (Val-des-Monts, QC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Melody Gardot's first CD (Worrisome heart) was a phenomenal achievement in restraint and intimacy. When I heard she was in the studio recording a full-length CD, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and give it a listen.
When the wait was over, I hurriedly picked up a copy of her "My one and only thrill" CD, slipped it into my CD player, and... was appalled. Gone is the subtlety, only to be replaced by the most outlandishly cheezy strings I have heard since I stopped listening to my grandmother's music. Strings, strings, more strings, and then just to be sure you have been sufficiently smothered in strings, well, more strings. It's as if some string composer wanted to use Melody as a vehicle for promoting his/her orchestrations, and forcefully took control of the recording sessions. I haven't looked at who produced this latest recording, but I will (just to add to my "avoid" list).
Melody, Melody, what have you done? Where have you lost that minimalist approach, those intimate moments, the under-produced and under-played beauty of your first recording? I haven't given up on you, and I am hopeful that your third recording will ditch the cheezy strings and return to the intimate night club ambiance that you so well embraced before.
Thrilled with our choice March 5, 2010 Debra Gifford This CD is absolutely wonderful - could not be happier with our selection. It was in brand new condition and arrived right on time. We listen to it often and enjoy it more each time.
Love bluezy, jazz you'll love this one March 1, 2010 Len Allen (Alton NH) If you are already a Dianna Krol, Alicia Keys or Nora Jones fan, you will love Melody Gaudet. It's no wonder she is platinum in France and will be here too very soon.
bit of a downer March 1, 2010 J. D. Sparks (San Francisco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Melody's story is truly inspiring and we should all be grateful her misfortune led to her discovering her gift, but, I, as probably and over-cheery American just found this CD a little bit too much of a downer for me to enjoy or listen to repeatedly. She does have a beautiful voice though and her jazz stylings are superb.
nothing short of amazing February 27, 2010 JRTAV mature beyond her years....resonant....haunting....playful...sensual....hypnotic....a talent that will transcend and inspire....this will hopefully not be her "one and only thrill" for us who have been fortunate enough to enjoy her many gifts
